Last night while timing my Super C I was reading my IH manual and doing like it said as far as timing is concerned. It told me to look through the hand hole in the bottom of the clutch housing, and rotate the crank till I saw the line marked DC 1-4, (which I am assuming means Dead Center for cylinders 1 and 4). It told me to line that marking up with the marking on the clutch housing cover which is just a semicircular piece of tin held on by two bolts. This piece has a crease in the middle of it that I assumed is the mark they were talking about lining up with. This seems fairly primitive and would tend to be inaccurate in my opinion. Am I lining the wrong things up or is that just how it's done with fine tuning somewhere else?

Well it's comforting to know that I did it right at least. I guess we'll see what happens in a few days.

it seeems crude but is actually quite accurate as the diameter of the flywheel is quite large
and the stroke on these tractors quite long.

I recently did my Super A and I was wondering the same thing. However I saw what appears to be a small raised marker cast into the bottom of the bellhousing. This was what I used and it was slightly before (as the engine rotates) the center rib on the plate you're talking about. Although I suppose it is entirely possible I've just gone and timed my tractor to a lump of grease stuck on the bellhousing. I guess I'll find out. SAm in NS

You've got it right. Unfortunately, the DC1-4 mark tends to be extremely faint, someone marked mine with some white paint to make it easier to see. Personally, I would rather use a stiff wire stuck in the #1 cylinder spark plug hole and turn the belt pulley until I find #1TDC. You can do this and watch the position of the rotor to know when you are on the compression stroke, and you don't have to crawl up under the tractor and fool with a flashlight or drop light.

Hi Josh, Peabody has a good idea using a piece of
wire or a long screwdriver,so you do not lose it
to get No1 piston on the compression stroke at TDC.

Once you get the piston at TDC you can install your distributor, be sure the rotor is
pointing close to No1 in the distr. It is easy to get it one tooth off and you may have to pull
it and reinstall until it is at No1. Once you get the engine running you can use a timing light to set the timimg correctly. Be careful around that flywheel. Hal

After you get it close with the wire, go ahead and crawl under it and get it exactly on TDC using the marks. As was said before, even one degree on the circumference of the flywheel is a lot, about 3/16".

Your not kidding. I almost missed it. I actually had to look through the clutch housing drain hole on the very bottom to verify that it was the DC 1-4 mark.
