Farmall H won't lean out

I have a distilite(?) model H. It has always been run on gas a far as I know. Since I have had it (about 2 years) it keeps fouling spark plugs. I have tried 3 different brands and heat ranges of plugs. The motor uses no oil and has 100psi on all cylinders. I can't seem to get the motor leaned out right. It will idle fine but burn rich under heavy pull. If I lean it out for heavy pull it wont idle or have any midrange power... I have another H and an M that I have no problems adjusting the carbs.

I am starting to wonder if a different main jet or whole carb was used on the distilite models? Could this be my problem.

Also this tractor has a mag on it. Could the mag be weak and not burnig the carbon off the plugs.

Please try to help me out replacing/cleaning spark plugs every 20 hours or so is getting expensinve.

Try bottom screw on carb .

I had the same problem with one I had. Never did totally resolve it. This did not have a high speed adjust. Just an air screw. Zenith carb. Don't know if it was gas or distillate. Plugs would get soot covered over time. She'd get to hoot'in and snortin and just plain snotty, or not start right off, then I knew it was time to clean the plugs. It was a PITA but I never got to working the problem enough to resolve.

We used a dual fuel H exclusively on gasoline for many years, with the original carb, and had no problem adjusting it. While it does have seperate load and idle jets, they do have some interaction.

A distillate carb in good shape can be adjusted to run fine on gasoline. From your description it sounds as if the idle circuit on your’s is inoperative (plugged).

Suggest you tear down the carburetor and give it a thorough cleaning. Pay particular attention to the idle passages and ports in the throttle body casting – that’s where the problem will be. Once the carb’s back on the tractor adjust the idle mixture first for a good idle, then set the high speed screw so you get a clear exhaust at governed RPM.

Unlikely your problem is magneto/plug related. It’s the heat of complete combustion – not the spark – that prevents carbon from building up on the plugs. Your carburetor is running rich. The resulting incomplete and relatively cool combustion is causing soot (carbon) to accumulate on the plugs and fouling them out.

wayne,

Not familiar with the H but all carbs I have ever seen have separate adj for load and idle. One does not affect the other.

Distillate engines have lower compression heads so it is probably running cold with gasoline. The hotter plugs should help and maybe advancing the timing would help. Gas burns slower than distillate (A very low octane fuel called "tractor fuel" but no longer available) so it needs more advanced timing.

Tons of carbs do not have another adjustment outside of the idle mixture.

You could have a weak coil or condenser in the mag. A mag will foul out plugs faster then a battery ignition not matter what. You might try magneeders.com for ideas also

You might also try me for your magneto needs!!!! Just a few things does it have a distalete manifold on it its a little boxier than the regular and I beleve it has a shutter to warm up manifold or something make sure that is all the way open . Then take the coil wire out of the dist cap and place it about 1/4 to 5/16' away from the screw on the side for the switch wire and turn it over slowly and look to see what color and how hot the spark is. Let me know more and I will see if I can help you more. JON
