I have a very early M that has a serial number that I can"t read the first number after the letters but there is an X 1 at the end. Any idea what the X means? Thanks

Check the letter on the castings to get an idea how old the tractor is.

Engine number on the boss under #1 spark plug will also give you an idea of the age. Since the engine may have been swapped, and most changes which are not obvious were to the engine internals, the engine number is valuable.

if it is a very early M it will have the fat oil filter.

if your serial number has x1 after it it is a gasoline high compression engine. that would make it not a real early one. all of the '39's were low compression m's.
