Splitting Cub with Hydraulics

Now that the mowing season is about over, I want to split the Cub to replace the crankcase seal. I see that I have to deal with two hydraulic lines that go from the pump to the front of the tractor.
1. Why are they there/what are they for?
2. What is the best way to move/remove them so I can split the tractor?
3. How do I drain the hydraulic fluid?

Thanks for any advice.

when you get your tractor split and remove the rear main seal you'll find that it isn't the seal to the crank that leaks but the seal to the housing. the seals made now are a few thuosandths smaller and they spin in the housing. clean everything good and epoxy the seal into the housing and let it sit till it cures before reinstsalling on the motor!

Although it isn't usually done this way, it's possible to split the Cub without draining the hydraulic system at all. It's a little awkward but it is possible to do so by removing the pump from the engine. It will be necessary to remove the coolant nipple from the right side so the front casting can drop to disengage the crankshaft pulley. (You'll see what I mean when you try it).

CAUTION!! Loosen the fill plug on the hydraulic unit BEFORE removing the drain plug. The unit is not vented and the chances of receiving a hydraulic oil bath are REALLY good if you don"t loosen the fill plug first. Ask me how I know!

Drain plug is on the lower left side of the hydraulic storage tank. To remove the lines simply unbolt them at the reservoir and hydraulic pump. Careful not to loose the o rings. There are two o rings contained in each of the blocks holding the hydraulic lines to the tank and pump. I might add - clean up really well around the blocks where the lines attach before removing them.

Why are they there and what are they for? The hydraulic pump is located at the front of the engine. The reservoir and cylinder are located behind the engine.

Your reply was very helpful. One question... you said the hydraulic drain was on the LEFT side of the storage reservoir. Mine appears to be on the right side - opposite the filler plug. Small square plus- maybe 3/8". Is this the drain?

Yeah, the drain is on the right. The manifold has o-rings at the pump end but the back has a flat gasket.
