560 Rear Hydraulics - How Do They Work??

K Fellas, This is a question for my Dad and I. We had a 400 Farmall, It was destroyed in a Tornado this spring along with the Farm. We bought a 560 Diesel for a replacement.

The Drawbar Hydraulics on the 400 had two cylinders on it. One under the belly that served as a tilt type effect and then one in the back like the 560 the moves the drawbar up and down.

Dad is getting ready to plow the gardens and we noticed the 560 has no second cylinder under the belly.

The 400 had a pin you pulled from a shaft that ran vertical on the right rear of the tractor to let the plow float. The 560 does not. The Hydraulics on the 400 had down pressure on the drawbar when the pin was in. You could press the drawbar down and actually lift the rear tires completely off the ground. The 560 will not go this low nor will it give down pressure.

The 560 does not seem to work that way and the drawbar does not go all the way to the ground like the 400. I noticed a large spring loaded lever on the left side of the drivers seat that has 4 positions on it on the 560. It appears to have something to do with the drawbar but it did not seem to have anything to do with how high or low the drawbar went up and down. Is there any way to get down pressure on the 560?? What does a guy need to do when plowing?? Is there something that allows the drawbar to float like pulling the pin on the 400??

I purchased a 460 a couple of months ago, I have not used it, it is currently disassembled for "restoration". So, I'm not the expert. But, the lever you are referring to is part of the "Tel-A-Depth" system. A Blue Ribbon Service manual for it was included when I ordered the manuals from Binder Books. The individual manual is GSS-1032, it explains how the system works. I do not know if all 460/560's have this feature or not, but as to down pressure I will quote from the manual, manual's words not mine --"Since the Tel-A-Depth system was not designed to provide implement down pressure the Fast Hitch on the tractor should not be used as a jack for changing tread settings, tires, and so forth. The minimum overlap provided in the control valve is not adequate to prevent leakage from the cylinder when supporting the weight of the tractor". Would probably work for breaking beads though, unless you lifted the tractor off the ground. As the saying goes -- this is already more than I know.

It's pretty obvious that the hitch is working correctly if the hydraulic cylinder is completely retracted when the hitch is completely lowered. If it isn't, you have a problem.

What do you mean by no down pressure? The fast hitch cylinder is 2-way. We used to use ours to break the beads on tires all the time. I don't think it would lift the rear of the tractor, but then again, a 560 with loaded tires and two sets of wheel weights is a lot to ask one little hydraulic cylinder to lift.

If you still had the 400, you could rob the hitch off it and install it on the 560. It should bolt right on.

There is a pin down beside the bottom of the fast hitch cylinder that you take out for plowing, acts the same way as the 400 hitch when you removed the pin. The handle you speak of is the traction control handle, run it in the top notch for plowing. There is a pin to remove on the right side of the fast hitch which will let it swing for plowing, also a pin on each side in front of where the points slide in the receiver that are moved from one hole to another to let the plow level from front to back. I have a 460 and do all this when I plow with it.
