Sounds like someone gave you some incorrect information on the last serial number for the 766. The first 766 would have been 7501, and according to the numbers I found, there were 10,799 766's built total, therefore, the last 766 would have been 18299, making your's 340th from last, a very late model.

IH's records identify serial 18319 as the last built- see the below thread with my name on it.

Yes, I answered this post before I read yours, below -- would be nice to be able to delete stuff.

According to Ken Updike's data book the first SN is 7101, last is 17900 -- 17900-7100 = 10800 -- Just going by what the book says, I have never seen one. Perhaps Ken will answer.

According to the serial number listings here on YT, 7501 was the first. This is perfectly logical, since every other model started out with 501, 7501, or 8501, and it also explains Caseyc's tractor. No disrespect to Ken, but there are quite a few little errors like this in his book, mostly typeo's on production numbers, horsepower ratings, model numbers, and engine model numbers. Guessing whoever proofread it for him didn't know an IH from a JD.

Yes, there are mistakes in it, but this site has them too--so I don't know. He says the 966 starts with 7101, the 786 and 866 with 8601. I don't remember the details of your original post, if you have actually seen the original serial tag, then that is what it is. You might ask this question on www.redpowermagazine.com, if you haven't already. Having done some writing myself, I know that proofing is difficult, especially with numbers.

That should read "--if Caseyc has seen the original serial tag--". As I said, proofing is difficult, particularly if I am doing it.
