being new to old tractors but not equipment, i have a question for the group, i have an H that has some light knocking when first started on a cold engine. after about 5 min. quiets down and don't hear it again unless restarted on cold engine. knock is around #1 and high in motor. at one time engine was opened and at least rings installed, my assumption. engine uses no oil at all, has good oil psi-30 at idle-hot, 50 at full load/throttle-hot. tractor pulls like a champ and runs like a top. i am thinking it might be a little piston rattle or maybe wrist pin. my question is this something not to uncommon, and has anyone else encountered this issue, and what was your experience.

Ernz,

You used the word "knock", so I assume that the noise is more of a "cracking" or "rapping" sound vs a "tic"? Kinda like a diesel sound?

If it is a wristpin, it is it's very early stages of failure tho, 'cause this type noise will usually stay with the enging cold or hot.

If the noise completely disappears after the 5 minutes, this means that something is swelling with tempreature and I think you are on the right track suspecting piston slap or a cracked piston, especially if someone did indeed go in there, just throw in a set of rings and not pay any attention to the piston clearance.

If on the other hand, the noise is more of a "tic" type sound and seems very high up, it could be coming from the valve train. Perhaps a valve adjustment is in order?

Dunno, it's hard to hear it over the phone like this. :>)

its not lifter noise, more of a solid light knock, sounds alot like my pickup on a cold morning, a little knocking then quiets up after running awhile.

Bet REALRON would have an answer. Good, bad, or indifferent, he'd have an answer.
