well i cut out of work early and went to pick it up. the trip was good, about 3 hours round trip. it was one heck of a load! that 766 was all my chevy diesel wanted. truck is tired from 200,000 miles already. anyways i can't seem to locate the serial number! there is a tag on the injection pump but i can't find any other tags anywhere. any ideas? it is a black stripe so i know it's a '76. aren't the tags usually on the bellhousing? nothing there. hope to hear something from you guys. i'll post some pics soon of the small "herd".

The Black Stripe 66's used a few rear end parts meant for the 86 series that were ready for production before the rest of the tractor. Mabey your tag is down on the right side of the transmission case, in front of the final drive, same place as an 86.

congrats on the new purchase. the 66 series is my favorite by far. i once saw a black stripe 1066 that had the serial tag on the gear shifter, hydraulics, 3 point control side down below the deck in front of the axle. i am not sure if this is the norm or if that was something else. it had the serial # on it though. our families 71 1066 has it on the bell housing like an H or M. hope this helps

Tag's on the bell housing. If it ain't there, you'll never know its serial number.

With no serial tag, the black stripe is useless in telling the tractor's age. If it's been repainted, they could've painted the black stripe on.

WTH do people rip the serial number tags off tractors anyway?

i know the tractor has never been painted. the dealer i bought it from sold it new but they couldn't find the paper work at the moment. the salesman i bought it from was even the guy that sold it new. he knows it's a '76. i do understand your point though about not having a tag. it is worthless with out it.
