Hi Fellers,

This morning, I made a deal with ol' Harley '83 down there in MO to buy his extra hydraulic pump.

An hour or two later I was in town, so I stopped by the "Red Shop" just to nose around for info on the little orbital motor gizmo.

Anyway, offhandedly, the shop owner tells me he has a 966 coming in for a full "In frame" and that the owner wants to sell the tractor.

How much is this new O/H gonna run, do you think? Possibly $4K?

I'd kinda like to know where the ball park is on this old tractor.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Allan

Hi Allan, Is the "Red Shop" you"re talking about the one in Chadron just south of the tracks and across the street from the "Cave"??? When I lived up there that was primarily where all the older IH"s in town were and they had a nice 826 sitting on the lot....I"d never seen one before at that time. I used to live just around the corner from there so I saw the place every day. For what it"s worth, I"m currently looking at a 966, supposedly has a fresh engine overhaul and a new TA, but the clutch is bad. Cab and loader(I was told) but the biggie is that it has an MFD on it which I"ll need to haul big round bales to the cows in deep snow if we ever happen to get any again. Last price I was quoted was $8600.00. I haven"t gone to look at it yet, but thought this figure would maybe be of interest to ya.

Hi Ron,

Yep, that's the place; those guys live and breathe IH tractors and are so very 'picky' when it comes to their work.

What I like about ‘em is that they “think thru” the problem first before they dive into a fix. They pretty well know what is wrong with any given rig before they ever pick up a wrench.

Sorry, not familiar with the terminology; what do you mean by MFD? Front assist?

Your pricing sounds just about right, I would guess. Henkens, out east of town, just sold a loaded, triple hydraulic 986 with a heavy loader for $14K; darned thing had 10,000 hours on it too.

How come we have to pay more out here in the boonies, anyway? ‘Taint fair! :>)

Hi Allan, Glad to hear that place is still running and still primarily IH based. I was in Chadron two or three weeks ago but didn't drive by the place like I usually do. Yep, MFD is "Mechanical Front wheel Drive". At least that's what I've seen them called in the advertisements, so that's how I typed it. I've seen other letter designations that mean the same thing like "FWA" for "Front Wheel Assist" I think. In reality, regardless of the letters, I usually just call 'em all "four wheel drives". :)

Allan, I gave $5850 one yr after an engine O/H. Ol girl only had 4500hr on her when I got her. Reason for O/H was the owner's Hand incorrectly installed a new air filter and loaded her with sand. Got her in 3-28-92. Hauled her out of Hollis OK.
So in todays dollars.....Some where around $7000.
I figure it this way $3000 for wore out tractor and $4000 for O/H. That will vary with overall appearance, cab?, % of rear tires, is there a set of duals, amount of slack in front end. How much wt. is she carring, Front... suitcases ? Rear cast...Only IH wts , or inner and outter aftermkt wts. Quick-hitch (like on all later model large tractors)? Keep us posted, Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

Hi John,

It has a Hineker cab, sounds like the kids have broken some of the windows while they were playin'/throwin rocks. Unless it has heat and air, I'll yank that dude, I'm not that old yet if the cab is in really bad shape.

Don't know about the hitch; haven't seen a fast hitch around these parts since the 70s, but sure don't know as yet.

How's about a picture of yours?

Thanks,

Allan

Hi JRB,

Darned if I know; don't even know how many hours are on the old gal. They don't even have the thing hauled into town yet, the way the story goes.

Seems as though the farmer has kinda fallen on hard times. The tractor has been parked in a shed for four years with a brand new loader on it; is totally covered in dust and bird dung.

So, the guy decides he has to up & sell the tractor, tries to start it and it won't start. Long story short is that the engine is frozen up from setting for so long.

So, he calls into town and tells "Red Mech" to come get it, o/h the engine and then sell it because he just will not sell someone the tractor in the condition it now is (People are kinda funny that way out here).

Another guy wants that new loader, and I told them that I'd sure be interested in looking at the tractor.

Anyway, I haven't even laid eyes on the thing yet, but it sounds like it's just what I've been looking for.

But, I'm trying to ballpark it, 'cause if it has a brand spankin' new engine in it, it still should not be more than around $7 to 8K, would you think?

Thanks for the help,

Allan
