Are the stepped pistons and the international fire crator the same? If not what is the difference? I was thinking of the overbore sleeves and stepped pistons. With the high compression pistons would it still use regular gas? This is not a production tractor, just garden plowing and hay rides. I feel that if I sell it I would want it to be in the best condition. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok lets try this again yes differences but the same Idea.Dont worry about going with the cheaper aftermarket. I run regular 87 octain in my SM with fire crators no problems . When I pull I run higher. Its hard to find anything thats not over bore these days. JON

Maybe someone else has better info, but i believe the normal stepped piston has a raised area on the top of the piston that looks like the opposite of the depression in the head. The “fire-crater” had a step but also had a semi-circle area in the step that formed a “crater” in the top of the piston in the step where the spark plug is located.

I have fire-craters in my “M” and run either an alcohol blend or regular gas in it with no problems. While you have the head off, I would suggest checking the exhaust seats to make sure that they have been replaced with the hardened ones that are designed for lead free fuel.
