The steering on my SM has gotten very loose the past couple of months. It now breaks the key in rough fields and is uncontrollable going down the road in 5th gear. I've heard that the gear can be "flipped" to tighten it back up temporaily. Is this true? The u joint is tight and so are the wheel bearings. Any ideas? Don't want to buy a new gear(s) right now. Thanks.

Thankfully it's not the gears. The bushing/bearing at the top of the bolster is worn pretty bad. How do I replace it and where do I get good cheap parts? Will be emailing you, Tim, shortly with other questions. Thanks for the responses everyone. This is a great forum!

Hey, I have replaced everything there is to replace in the steering of my Super M. If you want help through e-mails, e-mail me at tims_ih_tractors@hotmail.com, and I can walk you through and answer any questions you want. I am more than happy to offer my assistance, and I can probably get you cheap parts, too. Good luck.

Knauff It is true you can not flip the gear over the shaft is tappered. But you donot have to go 180 degrees the H & M came with a half gear so had to replace but if you have a full gear all you have to do is put it on so you have good teeth when you have wheels straight forward. But also as others said could be many things just have to check everthing.

If I had to buy a bearing and/or gear, where would be a good place to get cheap, good ones? I'm a little short on cash.

Check the ATIS site for their salvage yard list.

But befor eyou get you rcheckbook out, look at what is wrong. All the replies are possible, plus, the pipe plug at the front of the worm gear bearing may just be loose.

Another thing to check, On my SMTA the nut loostened up on top of the gear in the steering housing. When you turned the steering wheel the gear would loft before it turned. As mentioned below it could also be bearing on the front of the steering housing on the end of the worm gear.

Cannot be flipped over, however if its a full circle gear you could rotate it 180% to wear in a different pattern, might have the front bearing failing, goes under the large plug in front top of casting.
