Couple of quick questions about Farmall H

I am going through my H getting her ready for snow plowing season, and have run into a couple of problems:
1) Both the water pump belt and the generator belt are pretty loose by normal standards, cannot figure out how to tighten them up. The belts appear in real nice shape but should I just buy new ones?

2) Tractor has a coil/distributor, my dad says my grandpa used to have the same set up on his H and he always covered it up with a homemade "shield" cut from a piece of innertube to keep the snow/moisture out. Is this a good idea?

3) What size/hardness of bolts should I use to attach the plow frame to the tractor?

Thanks for the help, I am learning so dang much from this website I can't thank you all enough.

As to the shield--the only thing I would worry about with that is that if water did get in behind it, the rubber can"t "breathe" so it would hold that moisture in there, instead of allowing it to evaporate.

Like someone else said, as long as your system is in good condition, it"s probably not a problem, but if you want to do something, I would suggest just giving the wires, dist. cap, etc., a quick wipe down when you"re done. If you store it inside a shed that gets above freezing during the winter, it might be more likely to be a problem, but unless you actually experience a problem, I wouldn"t worry about it.

Brian, Rusty, Bob, and Dick all gave you just about the same information, and it is correct. I would add one thing, and that is that you don"t need the belts on your tractor to be as tight as you would on a car or truck. YOur engine is only going to be turning between 1500 and 1600 rpm"s and unless your belts are extreemly loose, they will do just fine being a little on the loose side.

If the belts are too tight you will wear out the water pump and generator. If the battery is charging the belts are tight enough!

Note you have a grease zerk on the carb side of the water pump (maybe under a brass cap) and one on the shaft just behind the fan. Give each one two shots once or twice per year.

The belts are tightened by adjusting the pulleys. The pulleys are both 2 piece, you adjust them by loosening the set screw, screws?, and the then rotate the outer half of the pulley inwards toward the inner half, it is on a threaded shaft, kinda like tightening a nut on a bolt. Both the water pump pulley and the generator pulley are made this way. If neither has been adjusted for a long time, you may have your work cut out for you. The size of bolts you need will be determined by the diameter of the bolt hole, and whatever lenght you need. Should be a minimum of grade 5. You can cover the distributor if you want, won't hurt a thing, but marbe not necessary.

Brian:

1 – Tension on both belts is set by adjusting the “split sheave” on the fan hub (for the fan belt) and on the generator hub (for the gen belt). To tighten either belt, first loosen the set screw that secures the threaded half of the split sheave to the hub. Then rotate the threaded sheave half as required to move it closer to the fixed half. A blunt punch and a hammer are helpful if the sheave is stubborn (they often are!). Helps also if you shoot a bit of PB Blaster, WD-40 or similar onto the threads first – but don’t get any on the belt!

Suggest doing the generator first – it’s easier to get at and to understand the process. Once you have the generator figured out then attack the fan belt!

2 – If the ignition system is in good condition, the distributor cap and wires are in good shape (clean, no cracks, everything fits tight, etc), rain/snow falling on the distributor won’t cause any problem. However there’s nothing wrong with shielding the coil/distributor with a flap cut from an old inner tube, a trimmed plastic antifreeze jug, etc.

3 – Standard commercial grade nuts ‘n bolts should hold your snowplow frame just fine, presuming they are sized properly. My plow frame attaches to the tractor frame with 3/4" bolts threaded into the existing tapped holes in the fixed bolster and the front engine mounts.

Happy snow plowing – it won’t be long now! (1st snow here in western NY is forecast for the end of the week...)

Yes, and you both gave the same answer! As my buddy Martha used to say that's a good thing!
