Today I chatted with a fellow who bought his Super M new in 1952. He has used it regularily since. He has a 6 volt system but he has added a 12 volt booster battery for starting. He grounds (+ve) the 12 volt battery with one lead of a booster cable, then touches the starter with the other. Apparently it fires right up. I couldn't start my Super W6 on Sunday night after it has sat for the summer. I used a newly charged 6 volt battery but no go. Any thoughts on a 12 volt booster?

Just don't put the boost cables on the 6 volt bat.

Neil: If you are boosting from another vehicle using the idea your friend suggests, be careful nothing touches between vehicles. I was doing just that 35 years ago, and nice new steel cable attached to tractor fell on bumper of 63 Pontiac. The bang was much like a rifle shot and I had pieces of battery in a 50' radius. Luckily car was parked behind Farmall 300, and I was standing in front of tractor tire. The tire sheltered me from the acid spray. The only damage was a new battery for car and a lot of rusty hardware in surrounding area.

Personally I would replace the battery cables with new 1 gauge cables with soldered on ends. You do that and with new 6 volt battery, if the W6 doesn't start at current temps, you have other things like points, condencer, rotor, cap, plugs or carb that need attention.

I can see your need in getting tractor going to assist in diagnosis. Since 1939 the very best way to get a stubborn 4 cylinder gas IH going is a tow start. I have tinkered all day on these, nothing would make them start, not even 12 volts. Tow them 25 feet and they are going. I can remember a neighbor, hay and cattle farmer, had a fleet of about 6 H's, 300's, etc. When summer work was over he backed them in shed for winter. Come spring, he never even tried the starter, just hooked to them with his loader tractor that he used year around. Most of them started in shed doorway.

Reminds me of F 20 it fell my lot to drive couple of summers when I was in high school. The tractor was not equipped with starter and sometimes it would not want to start in mornings. Learned to park on slight hill near house and if I needed pull start and no one was around to help with truck or another tractor I would go to barn lot catch and harness mule to pull tractor down hill . Worked every time.

Do you mean pull them and then pop the clutch while rolling? As a university student, I had a car that I always had to park on a hill if I wanted to start it without a boost.
In this case, I have a FEL but it should work in reverse right?

Neil: I'm very doubtful it is going to work in reverse. Best to use high gear or one of the two gears next to it and going foreward.

It works. Just observe polariies (+ to +, - to -) and unhook when it fires up. Do not create sparks near the battery to prevent an explosion; (presuming your tractor is positive grounded) connect the 12 volt neg. jumper cable to the starter lug and the 12 volt pos. jumper cable to a frame ground away from the battery.

I would think that would be a great place to use one of the 500 amp booster packs like Walmart sells. Make sure the lights are turned off!
