Hey All,

I am finally relocating back to PA after 4yr in PR. And I am finishing up a deal on an 154yr old farmhouse with an acre of back yard.

I own a 53 Stage I Super H. and I figure it could be used for mowing duties.

What type of mowers would you recommend/have experience with. I have never farmed, but a decent mechanic. All advice would be appreciated.

One of the older Cub Cadets with solid steel frame, cast iron front axle, and hydrostat transmission will do nicely for mowing an acre. They are not to expensive and repair parts are available. Those suckers are almost bullet proof and will take a lot of abuse, unlike some of the newer mowers with formed sheetmetal frames.

You should be able to pick up a Cub Cadet for less than the price of a used bush hog or belly mounted finish mower.

I agree with Allen as well. A riding mower would probably be just the ticket for the acre piece you have, the SH may be a bit cumbersome to use in that small area.

But, if you have your heart set on using the SH, I can understand. A finish mower (either 3pt or pull type) would be great for a yard, as long as you keep the blades sharp it will cut real nice.
I have never been a big belly mower fan but it would be more manuverable set up that way.

Have fun with your new property and welcome back to the states. Had enough of the hurricanes huh?

I've been mowing about two acres for about ten years with my father in laws H with a woods belly mower under it. I like it so much I'm restoring an H so I don't have to use my father in laws.It does a good job and twenty years from now it will still work well and be worth more than it is now and a riding lawn mower will be scrap.

I personally like the 7 ft sickle bar mower on my Super H. Didn't cost much, cuts close to the ground, works well for roadside mowing that a riding mower wouldn't do and you can let the grass get knee deep before getting started. By the way welcome back from PR. Pat in Wisc.

I kind of agree with Allen. I recently retired from a small place where I mowed about an acre and half with a riding mower and it worked fine. I have an "H" but didn't ever use it on the yard (field?).

Hi,

I'd keep it simple; an acre isn't much real estate. Wouldn't hardly even keep a ridin' lawn mower busy.

Tryin' to help,

Allan

I have seen 72" woods belly mount finish mowers on H"s. You could also put a 3 point hitch on the tractor and use a rear mount finish mower. For versitility that would probably be the best of the two.

Would a three point hitch and a 12' batwing brush hog be overkill on a one acre back yard??? LOL
