Got a 1953 Super A, and found a Woods 5ft Brush hog, model M5 for $450. Can this mower be used with the Super A?? Is it priced right? If it can be used, do I need an overriding clutch ? or slip clutch? what ever the proper terminology is...

Thanks

If my memory serves a Woods M5 is a light duty ,cheaply made 3 point hitch mower that was made to compete on price with a lot of low end short line mowers .Also unless you have a 3point on the Super A you won't be able to use it .I had a Woods L59 on my Super A and it did well. This is a belly mower with mounting s made for the Super A

Bill, I have a 5' Corsicana on my 53 super A and it handles it real well. keep the blades sharp and it will do a heck of a good job. I do wish I had the override clutch tho. ugly

If I had to guess I'd say it allows the mower to continue to run while the tractor is still or changing gears?

It is actually called an over-run coupler and fits on the PTO before the drive shaft for the mower. It prevents the spinning mower from pushing the tractor. Tractors like the Farmall A use the same shaft for the PTO and the drive assembly for the transmission. A mower can push you into a ditch very quickly without one. Even if the clutch is disengaged, the mower will still turn the final drive for your rear wheels.

Bill, You should get the overriding clutch no matter what you do as far as a mower. I would think that 5ft mower is going to be a little on the big side for your Super A, but if your grasses are not too high you may get away with it. After you make your initial pass around the field you can take a partial cut with the mower so the tractor can handle it easier. Also it depends on how hilly your property is.

Thanks to all. I get into a mindset where I think specific equip has to go with specific tractors. Sounds tome like anymower is adapatable to any tractor. I was hoping to hear if anyone could tell me if the Woods M5 can be used with the Farmall. Sounds like it can. Am I thinking wrong? My land has a few small hills, and couple of spots of heavy grass, but most of it's been cut in the past 2-3 years.
