I am working on a W-4 McCormick Deering tractor.
It backfires when I try to start the engine. What could be causing this problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Rick

Timing is 180 degrees off. Guaranteed.

I'll bet you picked the wrong TDC on cylinder 1.

Make sure you have the firing order going in the right direction - double check the rotation of the distributor. My W-30 will run and backfire a lot if the firing order is in the wrong direction!

Timing off or firing order not right. Recheck the firing order (1342) first.
