I'm in the process of rebuilding my H water pump as it had a cracked pulley. How much IH packing should one use?

Can you take it back to store? Sounds like they owe you a new one! (Yeah, I know, it's a pain to take off and put on another!)

I assume this is one of the "new production" water pumps that several companies are selling now?? if so, these are made in turkey or india, so you can guess the overall quality of these parts.

I bought one of those from Steel Wheel Ranch. It had some subsitute packing in it. It leaked, using IH packing helped, but it still leaked. I bought some of the graphite coated string from NAPA, it helped but still drips, slightly. The problem in both the old and new pumps is that the nut gets loose. The shaft, etc, appears identical to the original pump, except I think the shaft is metric. I can find no reason that both the old and new pump should leak, nothing visibly wrong with them, but the IH packing does not work well in them. The tolerances in both the old and new pump, including the packing are not exactly rocket science, but I don't know why either should leak. My personal opinion is a packing quality control problem, but I have found no one else with the same problem.

I remember you writing about that earlier. It is pretty odd.

I took my water pump apart when I replaced the adjustable side of the pulley. The bearings weren't too loose, and everything else looked okay for being 60 years old. Putting it together, I used new IH packings, and it has been fine.
