I've purchased a 1950 Farmall M in bad shape. My experience in restoring tractors comes from the F-series line but I'm trying something new. The M has been sitting outside for approx. ten years without anything covering the exhaust pipe. I drained several gallons of water out of the block with some old mucky oil. I also drained approx. one to two gallons of water out of the transmission but figured that would be normal. One of the tires is locked up but figured that to be the brake. The transmission shift in all the gears well. Since I've filled the engine full of diesel fuel, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and acetone to soak over the last summer. Anyone have experience with the M's block being full of water. I'm sure it was full up to the breather tube. I don't see any cracks on the outside of the block but sure I expect to need a new block or do I have a chance of saving it? Thanks

David and John thanks for the information. John I can bet I dumped about fifteen gallons of water out of the engine. While the water was draining I was having a hard time believing that much water could come from that engine. I guess time will tell, but it sounds like these blocks can take a beating. John thanks for the pictures. I take lots of pictures during my restoration projects and enjoy seeing others. I had an F-20 engine with the head off and no oil pan on the motor. That engine reminded me of the pictures you showed. I didn't have to worry about the block cracking.

SproutW,

I just started digging into a '40 M that sounds like it had a similar history -- I think it got left out for a few years and rain/snow got into the cyclinders via the exhaust manifold. It was *seriously* rusted frozen. Check these out:

Once I had the engine off the frame, I was able to push the pistons out using a hydraulic jack...three out of the four came out with the sleeves. I had to cut through the sleeves with a band saw to recover the connecting rods. The block needs new sleeves, pistons, and valves, but the block itself was ok and the crank/camshafts are hunky dory too. So, other than having to drop something around $500 for rebuild parts, I think you and I should both be able to get our M's back into running order.

Good luck!

- David
