I have an M engine block which I bought to salvage the crank, rods, and a few other parts. This engine apparently was allowed to freeze up one winter, and has one broken cylinder. Other than using it for a boat anchor or doorstop, does it have any value? can this be repaired?

How bad is it broken? If it is just cracked, a machine shop can probably over-bore the cylinder and install a “permanent” sleeve that they can machine to fit the regular replaceable sleeve. I have a 560 Diesel that has two of them done that way.

I’m not real thrilled about turning engine blocks into boat anchors or new cars unless they are actually in pieces. Technology and metallurgy move on giving us possible solutions in the future for what seem like insurmountable problems now.

If it’s in pieces, maybe you can use it to mount something like a drill press on and use for a conversation piece?

Never thought of using it for a drill press base, it certainly is heavy enough to lend stability. It's broken beyond being cracked, Actually has a chunk missing from #2 cylinder, between #2 and #3.

I looked into recycling some old cast iron tractor parts but it was too much work. They were giving $150 per ton for clean cast iron engine blocks,by clean they mean absolutely no steel(no freeze plugs,no broken off bolts,no oil passage plugs, and no repair sleeves) And the big v8's and inline 6's had to be broken in two pieces because of their dimension requirements, yup a sledge hammer. That was just more work than I wanted to do. I have a bench grinder mounted on a case 159 engine block, works good.
