I don't understand how my distributors main shaft gets lubricated? If I oil the top of the cam, oil can't get to the main shaft. There is a seal at the bottom of the shaft next to the drive gear, so oil can't come up. ( I thought the seal should have been at the top of the distributor ). So how does the shaft get lubricated? Also, the grease hole is blocked off buy a brass sleve that is in the housing, I suspect from a previous rebuild.

Please enlighten me!

Thanks Bob

Bob: I been running Farmalls for over 50 years and never had a grease zerk in either of those holes. I have seen guys have more trouble with zerks for greasing the distributor shaft, than guys who don't. The guys using zerks almost always get to much grease in there.

About every two years I remove the plugs, and use a squeeze tube of white automotive grease. A few decades ago an IH technician told me to use the white automotive grease. His reasoning was regular gun grease gets to stiff in cold weather.

I see I need to drill out the greasing hole and drill the bleeder hole, Where do you find a zerk with a thread big enough to fit that screw hole?

Hi Bob, If its a letter series tractor there should be two pipe plugs on the distributor on the RH side buy the wire hook up and farther ahead you take them out and install a greese zerk and give not more than two pumps and reinstall plugs. JON

You'll have to take the dist. apart, drill a hole through that brass bushing, and then install a grease zerk. Put your grease gun on it and start pumping, one or two pumps should do it, pump the handle slowly, when you feel resistance, stop, it's enough.
