Is it OK to mix hydraulic/transmission fluid with engine oil, as I don`t know what is already in the transmission ?

Is the only solution to drain the oil out?

Also, where is the filler for the transmission on an IH 484 Diesel (1980)?

Kev

Absolutely maybe! But I would never do that with my tractor. You just don't know what you are getting. Just drain the old stuff and refill it with the right stuff. It will give you peace of mind, if nothing else.

It depends. If you are talking about putting motor oil into the transmission of your 484, then I wouldn't. The transmission was designed to run on hy-tran and only hy-tran. Motor oil wouldn't provide enough lubrication for the pump and could possibly cause it to cavitate. It might work for a while if you put it in, but down the road, you could pay for it. If we are talking about a letter series tractor, then yes, you can run engine oil(but hy-tran works better). Just make sure that it is NON-DETERGENT oil. Detergent oil foams under pressure and you will find that as the oil heats up, your hydraulics will gradually fade until they fail.

It is not recommended, but it won't hurt anything either. Engine oil is thicker and doesn't work as good in cold weather. Lots of tractor owners in the south run the same oil in both engine and transmission. I have accidentally put engine oil in the transmission, but if your stuff leaks as bad as mine it all gets pumped out eventually.

Hi Kevin

I agree with parts man that if you're unsure, drain it out and replace with Hy-Trans. I know whenever I get a tractor, the first thing I do is drop all the fluids out of it and replace them even if the sellers say they just did.

Also, I'd never recommend mixing transmission oil with motor oil...the two are designed to work in different ways.

Kev, a 484 should use HY-TRAN ONLY in the transmision!! If it's been a while it wouldn't hurt to change it anyway. The fill plug is on top of the lift cover, right behind the seat. They are a pain to check, the O-manual says to run for 3 minutes at 1600 RPM, shut down and check the dipstick.
