How can you know if you overgreased a clutch zerk? Will clutch fail to engage so you can't release drivetrain? Thanks.

I don't think that would be your problem, from the sounds of it, the clutch plates aren't separating. It sounds like your clutch needs some adjustment. As for the grease on the clutch lining, It would cause it to slip under load(you let out the clutch in 5th gear and the tractor sits there). Yes, you can overgrease the pilot bearing on a tractor. If you ever noticed, the pilot bearings on most of the letter series tractors were able to be greased. When the Hundred series came out, they were permanently sealed. This was because IH was having trouble with clutches needing replacement because the extra grease got on the clutch facings . If you read a letter series manual, it says to only put 1 or 2 pumps of grease in the pilot bearing. I don't think it would matter too much if you overgreased the throwout bearing, it would just get thrown around the clutch housing. Just don't really overdo it. Hope this helps!

Dave - Do you mean you can't get the clutch to disengage and it won't go into gear?? If so you have a linkage adjustment issue or perhaps problems with the friction disk/pressure plate assembly. Overgreasing would not be the cause.

However extreme overgreasing can cause the clutch to slip once the excess grease gets onto the clutch friction surfaces. But it would require shooting MANY tubes of grease thru the clutch zerk in order for this to happen!

Thanks Bob. I know that I have some clutch issues on this tractor (guess I'm not alone from reading these pages) but from what you advise I am thinking that shooting two squirts of grease into that zerk, until I saw it ooze out the side of the bearing, is not one of them.

What tractor/Which zerk ? My 444 has 3 , one on each end of the pivot shaft and one on the release bearing.
If you get grease on the clutch linings you will have trouble, could slip or swell and stick.

An IH 240. The zerk is down near your left foot where the clevis rod turns a shaft entering the clutch housing. I don"t think grease could have entered or got on the clutch linings but somebody elsewhere warned against overgreasing clutch zerk and I might have done that the other day.

No, I don't think you can get grease onto the clutch facing from there.
The place where over greaseing can lead to trouble refered to the throwout bearing grease fitting. Even there I think it would take a LOT of grease to cause a problem.
