The previous owner of my Hough 30B Payloader delivered the parts manuals yesterday, and armed with that and the advice I got here, I started working on the old girl again.

I added a pint of Diesel fuel conditioner and a pint of isopropal dry gas to the tank, drained a bit out of the bottom of the filters, topped them back off and bled the entire system all the way to the injectors. I had oil at each cylinder. (All this time, the twin heavy duty batteries were charging)

I held the glow plug switch down for a slow count of 30, and hit the starter and got - - nothing. It turns over nice, but the first time, it didn't even try to start. I tried the glow plugs several more times, working up to a slow count of 90 seconds. THAT time, it tried to fire on one cylinder.

I had also plugged in the tank heater before I began, and as the engine warmed up (It was 50 degrees outside temp) it consistently tried to run on 1 cylinder.

My specific questions are -

Is it possible to flood a diesel? (and what would I do about it if it is?)

How do you time a diesel, and could that be my problem?

Is it possible to take the injector pump apart myself and clean it, or are they too complicated for a mere mortal without an exploded diagram to mess with?

It's a Roosa Master injector pump. Any idea how much it would cost to send it out for a rebuild?

There IS a wire that extends from a lever on the outside of the pump to a handle in the cab. (Seperate from the throttle linkage) What might that be and what should I do with it while trying to start it?

I appreciate any and All advice I get!

Hi,

We had a 706 diesel once that also was a very bad starter. But later we found out that the injection nozzels were mounted the wrong way that means with the glowplug end for the hole in the pre-combustion chamber, we turned them around and the problem was fixed.
Maybe this helps.

If she's trying to fire, I wouldn't suspect the pump just yet. You need to try two other things first. 1- make sure all of your glowplugs work. Like the other guys said, they are extremely important. Those 236's and 282's won't start on the hottest day in July without at least 15 seconds on the glowplugs, and I'm not joking. 236's were the worst, the tank heater is a very good idea on a 50 degree day. 2- Play around with that shut-off lever. Try starting it with the lever all the way one direction, then try it all the way the other direction. Timing is not the problem, unless someone had that pump off, put it back on, and didn't even try to start it. Might also want to try bleeding it one more time.

Ibby, The fuel shut off control is controlled by that choke like cable that runs up to the cab. The apparatus on the RM pump should be turned to the right or clockwise for starting/running. All the way to the left is for shutting off the fuel inside the pump thus killing the engine. There should be stops on the apparatus which are set correctly during a pump rebuild.

Make sure of the glow plugs first, then make sure you are getting a good solid spurt of fuel without bubbles of air out of each of the lines to the injectors as you are purging the air out of the system. If you are getting dark black smoke out of the exhaust as it is trying to fire, I'd say you still have air in the system.

Most diesel shops would be able to rebuild your pump but it most likely will cost you several Ben Franklins. Good luck with it.

IBBY If it is trying to start I would recheck the glow plugs, they have been talked about on this sight many times. I say the only way to be sure they work is to take them out and test. In the fifteen years I worked on that engine in 560 460 656 706 I saw alot that showed on the meter but when I took them out and tested them were bad. And yes that can be a bad job to do.

Have you checked your glowplugs?

Most diesel injector pumps I've seen have a lever attached to something along the lines of a choke cable that goes to a handle the operator can reach. On my diesel the cable was replaced with a piece of quarte inch steel tube, 'cause that's what I had. The lever is called the "kill switch" and it's used to cut off the fuel and stop the engine. If that's what you're looking at it really needs to be in the right position for the engine to start.
(I've been at work all night and sound the right smart aleck, don't I? Not my usual. Please forgive.)

You are not going to want to work on that pump yourself, have it shipped out because it isn't worth tearing the pump down and making a mistake. I have no idea what that handle could be for. Every injection pump I have ever seen has had only a single lever(the throttle). I don't necessarily think that you can flood a diesel because it uses compression to burn the fuel and not spark plugs. So if you have good compression, the fuel "should" ignite. From the sounds of what the previous owner told you (it just started running rough) I kinda sounds like something in the fuel system although don't quote me on this. Hope I helped.
