Hi all,

I'm working on a '40 M, and I was just able to get the definitely-non-original steering wheel off. It looked like something you'd put on a 60's muscle car and it had been welded onto the shaft (!). Now that I've got it clear, I'm left with the steering shaft and what looks like a keyed hub or spacer on the end of it. The new steering wheel won't fit on the shaft without removing (or cutting down) the spacer, so I need to get it off. Is it just press fit onto the shaft? Any secrets or tricks? Thanks,

- David

Thanks guys! I sliced it down the keyway with a sawzall, then used the puller. It was still a fight to get it off, but I finally won.

Before using a torch or puller, I would cut a slot into the hub parallel to the shaft. It could be done with a hacksaw or cutoff wheel. Drive a chisel or wedge into the slot. The hub will split. If the key is visable, make the cut deep enough to hit it.

I just ran into this myself a few weeks back. The shaft is keyed and I believe slightly tapered. The remaining part of the steering wheel on the shaft is kinda pressed on when you tighten the nut on the shaft. I had to use a 3 jaw puller and LOTS of heat to get it to budge. Heat the steering wheel hub and dip the threaded part of the shaft in water, but not the hub. If you cant dip it in water spray it with WD40 or some penetrating oil. This will allow the hub to expand and the shaft to contract. Try that a couple times then put a puller on it. Good luck.
