I have a 53 Super C and the two hydro lines on the flanged manifold are leaking. Are these joints silver soldered?? If so will heating these manifolds up and putting new siler solder into the joint solve the problem without damaging the flanges on the ends??

RPM: I should have pointed out the repair on my Farmall 130 hydraulic pipes was brazing not silver solder.

On my “C” I cut the lines back from the pump about a foot and brazed pipe couplings on them so that I could add a remote valve. BUT, (and a big one at that) I’m not sure if the pipes are silver soldered to the pump or not. I am a bit skeptical about silver solder being able to tolerate the amount of heat that a hydraulic system can generate. You can possibly tell by the color of the fusing agent if you clean it thoroughly with a wire brush. Brazing is usually a bronze or gold color and will not scratch with an awl or screwdriver easily. Silver solder is usually silver in color and is soft enough to easily scratch with an awl or a screwdriver edge.

My '52 Super C has had the lower pipe silver soldered previously on the end bolted to the pump. It also has a leak up front somewhere, haven't decided yet if it is a leaking o-ring, seal, or the solder needs redone. I would think that with the low temps used for soldering that it wouldn't hurt the flange. If you were worried about distortion, you could take lines off and bolt them to a big steel plate to dissipate heat and prevent warping.

Good luck,
Bill

RPM: I did my Farmall 130, the hydraulic lines developed several pin holes. All these holes were at least 3' from the manifold. I remember the guy doing had them red hot. My pipes have rusted badly over the years, to a point they are rough. When this happened I had decided another set of pipes wold be needed. Put those pipes back on for about 6th time one year back about 1994. Never had anymore problem. I did clean them up good and painted with a rust paint.
