I am looking at an IH 464 diesel utility tractor with a loader. I am looking for a tractor to run a 2 bottom plow and maintain traction, run an 8 foot pull type disk, harrow, 4 row ih 56 cornplanter, spinner spreader etc.. a tractor with a loader would be a bonus but i am concerned that the utility tractor may not plow well due to size i.e., low profile and smaller rear wheels. Does anyone out there have experience using a 2 bottom or bigger plow with this tractor and how well did it work? (I only plow about 2-3 acres a year)

Chad, you should have no problem using a 2-14 plow. Certainly you have plenty of hp. The only thing you may lack with 28" rear wheels is traction in heavier ground. You can add weights or load your rear tires with Calcium chloride. Then you could plow just about any kind of ground worth plowing. You"re looking at about a 3 hour job to plow 3 acres.

Chad: 464 will handle 2x14 plow in any conditions. Under ideal conditions like sandy loams it would handle 3x14. From the goals you outlined, I would go with the 2 bottom plow.

I've owned plows from single bottom to 5 bottom and everything in between. In my years I would give the edge to the 2 bottom plow on quality plowing. That is only a slight edge as all plows will do good work if properly adjusted. Remember tractor wheels should be adjusted aprox 20" to 26" from inside of rear tire to center line of tractor for a 2x14 plow. I have a 2x12 plow and my tractor wheel is 22" from center. With a mounted plow that range of dimesions quite important.

Hugh,

Do you remember when IH came out with that "high speed" bottom? Did it show up at about the same time as the 560s or was it later when the 06s/56s hit the market?

Can't remember, my ol' brain is going south on me. :>)

Allen: I remember, but I don't remember when, so two heads are no better than one. I was in sandy loam country, and with sand you also get larger particles. Problem is some of those particles can be as large as your head. I didn't have a lot of stone, but the few that were there were anchored quite solid. About that time also we were all starting to plow 7" to 8" deep. Our dads had all the stone removed in the top 6". I tended to stick with the old 3.5 to 4.5 mph, Super Chief bottoms. Those Super Chief came about 62 and I'm guessing and it is only guess that the high speed version came at same time.

Chad;

The 464 should pull two bottoms real easy. hp is about right. 46 at the pto and 42 on drawbar.
wt. 4900lbs.

Off the top of my head, I think the 464 is about 45 horsepower. For 2-3 acres, you should have no problem with any of the implements you listed. If you worry about it being a utility tractor, just think about all of the 8N Fords out there that did all of the same things that you plan on, on much larger acreages.
