Can Someone Explain this to Me?

I"m a little confused on how the model numbers of the Farmalls work from 460 on up. Here"s what I"ve gleaned so far from reading on here: The first digit is a 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8, and the second two are -06, -60, or -66. But, some of these model number combinations don"t seem to exist; for example, I"ve never heard of a 466 or 606. Can someone clear this up for me?

Nathan: I think you are confusing two separate series of IH tractors. In 1958 IH introduced a new series of tractors, they were 140, 240, 340, 460, 560 and 660. In 1963 another new series was introduced, the 140 remained, and the rest were as follows 404, 504, 606, 706, 806 and 1206. By 1967 they had 140 444, 544, 656, 756, 856, 1256 and 1456. 1972 saw the introduction of 66 series; 666, 766, 966, 1066, 1466 and 1566. 1976 was start of 86 series 686, 786, 886, 986, 1086, 1486 and 1586. These were most of the American line. You must also remember IH were producing tractors in Britain and Australia. I'm not going to try and sort those out for you. I have not gone into articulated tractors either.

It was explained to me that in the 1958 series (or x40/x60 series) the 2nd digit was the number of cylinders in the motor, and the 1st digit was the number of plows it was rated to pull.

The 1963 series (or x04/x06) was swapped so that the last digit is now the number of cylinders in the motor, and the 1st digits were a relative HP number.

Stan: Every time I or indeed with a group try to apply the thinking you speak of, we come to one model that shoots you right in the foot. Don't have too much problem with the plows and cylinders on the 40 - 60 series. The later models on hp just doesn't wash. examples 1066- 6 cylinder yes but well over 106 hp 4366, 4386 and larger- 6 cylinder yes but those tractors no where near 400 hp. You may have to talk with the ghost of an IH engineer to be sure.

Hugh,
No arguments here! I didn't even try after the early 1960's introduction of the x04/x06 series. What about the 4100 Steiger in '65 !? Then the Hydro 70 and 100 models. I'm guessing the turbo knocked the 1066 off the chart, and I've heard that later 1066's poss came with some 466's vs the 414's. That should really knock it off the chart, but we're way out of my league talking about any of this stuff!

Ok, so then my 606 is a 6 cylinder tractor with +/- 60hp? Book says 53 so I guess that's close enough.

There really isn't any pattern, although some may disagree. This has been discussed before, with no clear answer.

606 is correct. I believe the 466 would have been the 464 which became 474, 484, 485, etc
Confused now?
