Well i was just wondering for about $500 what can i get. I really like the W-4 however for some reason i dont think i will find one for $500. I also like all the tractors that are offset. Or do you think i should just focus on finishing up and enjoying my grandpas old H?

Ask around - you never know what you will find.

I purchased my last tractor, an IH Cub, from a co-worker. He sold a G Allis at auction several years earlier. One day I asked him if he had any left over Allis parts in the barn. His reply was negative on the Allis parts but that he had a IH Cub with mower and plow sitting in a shed. He had parked it 6 years earlier.

I have a 1940 MH 101jr, had to drag it up out of a swamp, got it home, had it running in about four hours. Needs all the tin, hood, fenders, grill exc. Needs tires, wheels and at least one hub,had one steel wheel and one rubber tire on rear when i got it. Also have a 1954 AC WD-45. Motor was stuck when I got it. I've been using for the last ten years. Freed up motor, replaced seals in cylinders for the loader, and I just replaced the brake linings last month. The loader has a bucket and a eight foot snow blade. 1930 Case C now running, 19?? IH OS-6 not running at this time, has inturnal water leak somewhere. Got these four tractors for free. I never look at tractors that are setting by the road with For Sale signs on them. I always look for the ones that the owner isn't thinking about

Look around for auctions. Won't happen every time, but I've gotten a couple of running H's for <500 and I saw a JD70 that was complete go for 650. Kicked myself ever since. At the same sale I saw a complete cub go for 400, but it was pretty rough.

i agree with Zane, work on your H and just keep your eyes open. there was an old tractor in the woods by my sister's house. every time i drove by for a year or so i would look at it from the road. one day i went and checked what it was, and it turned out to be an old F-14. a few months later i happened to see the owner of the lot out working in his field and asked if he'd sell it. i offered $200 and he was glad to get it. sure it needs work, but it was all there and i'm not looking to have it finished in a month anyway. deals turn up if you're patient.

Unless you really luck out you will be money WAY ahead to spend a little more. I have learned this over and over again. Even a free tractor can easily end up costing you more than one you paid $1000 for. My cousin bought an M Farmall for $200. He now has $5300 into it. EVERYTHING was worn out/cracked/broken, etc. My thoughts. Glenn F.

They're out there. A person just can't be in a hurry for a tractor. While you are working on what you now have, just keep looking and asking around, one will turn up. It's kinda like finding the old airplane in a barn. 'Course, I haven't heard of that happening for quite awhile.

I have been looking around and even a parts tractor will cost $500 or more, I would just fix up the one you have.

I don't know if you'd get an offset tractor that even runs for $500. Same story with a W-4. The offsets are really useful, and the W-'s are uncommon in most areas, so they are in high demand, and priced accordingly. H's are about the only thing that can be bought in good shape for $500. Once saw a very nice H sell for $700. On the other hand, $500 could go a long way finishing up your H.

Oh, it's possible. You've got to be in the right place at the right time and get lucky. But it is possible. SAm in NS

In general $500 tractors will need a lot of work, everything from engine, possibly transmission, virtually all seals and gaskets, not to mention tires and refinishing. Any thing cheaper and you are basically talking parts tractors. My opinions are not all inclusive, as you could luck out and find something.

I think for now you should stick to one tractor until it is finished to your satisfaction, take it from me, when you have more than one, none of them ever get the attention they deserve, because the latest addition is always hollering at you.
