W4 Problems :(

Ok guys,
I went to pick up my "new" W4 today, it's been shedded all of it's life and very well taken care of, just hasn't been started for about 3 years as the owner had a triple bypass then and is 82. First off we couldn't get gas at the carb; that's an easy fix as the sediment bowl was right clogged with lead, and I mean CLOGGED!. Anyhow, got that fixed and now have great gas flow to the carb, but it just wouldn't fire (even with new plugs).
I figured that we might as well pull the carb and clean it up right with new gaskets etc.. so we did....and after taking it apart, we found a bunch of antifreeze in the bottom. I can't find any cracks on the block or head, could this be a head gasket that has deteriorated and is now no good? Is there any "easy" way to tell? I checked the antifreeze and it's right full in the rad and will never freeze in a million years according to my tester. I know that the engine on my H is much the same, but have never encountered this problem before. Thanks for any advice.

Jeff

W4's have a low pick up point in the gas tank so they get all the crap. Put a fuel filter in-line. If you are getting gas at the carb, check to see if it is flooding out of the side air intake. If so, there should be no fuel probelm. There are 2 things a engine needs to start 1-fuel: 2-spark. First, pull off a high tension lead and see if you have spark to a ground source when you crank the engine. If not start tracing the power. Chances are the points are stuck, corroded, and the condensor corroded. Change these. With the ignition on, and the points in the closed position (rotate engine if needed) flick the points apart and see it you have spark. If there is no spark between the points check to see if there is power at the connection. If you have power and spark at the points but not at the plug, check to see if there is power on your coil. If there is power on the coil and spark at the points, change your coil.

Hope this helps!

I can't for the "life-of-me" figure how antifreeze would get in the carb. I would forget about it...clean the carb, change the oil, belt it to your H and let it spin!!!!! Do not use your starter, good to get new oil everywhere before running and the belt will even run-up your temp. a bit.
After you have run it a while under her own power, change the oil and check for anti freeze. (I don't think you'll find any) ps I hope you cleaned the tank real good, and put a good screen in the bowl, or your carb fix might be a waste.
best o' luck
