I am considering buying a Farmall A to haul my firewood in the winter. The one I am looking at has a full set of cultivators, one rear rim is in pretty bad shape, and it does smoke, although the oil pressure is good and it does not make any unusual noises. The tires are ok, the price is 600.00. Is this tractor worth it? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Brian

Drive it up a hill at idle, make sure it does not stall. I agree with a previous post on how much it is worth to you. Check the oil, and how well it starts. Pull the sparkplug wires off one at a time, but don't lose the order, and make sure nothing unusual is going on. One of mine is corroded and there's some kind of white powder all over the plug and wire.

Anyone know where to get a sparkplug wrench?

Don't know about other areas but around here the cultivators, if in good condition, would sell for $600. Doesn't sound to bad to me.

Brian, The bigger question than what is a tractor worth is what is it worth to you to get your firewood hauled from point "A" to point "B", and any other task you might expect of a tractor.

Thank you all for the advice, I'll see what I can do with the owner on the price. Since I have no need for the cultivators and if I do buy it I will be keeping it, I guess I could sell them, but I have no idea if they will work on anything else or what they are worth.

Doesn"t seem too far out of line to me. Might last quite a while before you need to invest in an engine job/

If that is all you need the tractor for then the engine would probally last for many more years. If you are going to work the tractor on a steady basis then offer 400 and expect to rebuild your engine soon. I have a smoker but only use the tractor on small occasions and have had no problems. Hope this helps.

Price is a little steep considering the engine. As to the oil pressure, run it for 30 min to an hour and you will probably find a substantial pressure drop.
