Thanks in advance for any advice. I just bought a IH Farmall Super A. I am trying to determine the year from the sn, but not having any luck. The plate on the seat frame is very worn down, and not sure if the numbers on it or a proper sn or not. The best I can come up with is AA1 on one part, 283359 (i believe, the best I can tell without filing it away completely), and I'm sure about the 28 & the 59. Also, there is the number 1540 stamped on it below/to the right of the sn.

I have good numbers off the xmsn & hydraulics block, and those are 357657-R1 & 351687-R1.

Can anyone help me out with this? or at least point me in the right direction??? Thanks again for your help.

The "T" date code on your tranmission and gear box are for 1950. The serial number you have is enough to indicate 1950. The engine block date code "S" is 1949. Its known that parts could be cast one year, put in stock, and used the next year, especially if cast later in the year. I'm betting $1 its a 1950. FF1 would make it an Internationl Super A. I suspect the hydraulic system suffered a falilure early in its life and was replaced which would explain the 1952 casting. (maybe it was still under warranty?) 1540 would be max idle rpm, but seem a little high since Guy Fays book says 1400rpm for the I A, and 1450 for the I SA1. Since your gas peddal is missing, maybe someone swapped it for the throttle leaver so they could do farming instead of what ever the tractor use to do.
Anybody else care to chime in???

Kendall, I really appreciate the info. I agree with you on the hyd system. If it happened early on, then it would appear to look the same as the other components over the years.

I guess the only question I have now is how can I confirm if it is a Super A or a Super A-1.

Doug

Your serial tag info is confusing. Super A-1 started in 1954 with 123ci engine, identified by FAA-1 on the tag. Serial number started with 356001. International Super A was IAA. Farmall A and Super A was FAA.

Re: Farmall Super A Additional Info in reply to dugcg, 09-29-2004 13:19:47
Ok, I have more sn's now, and still no clue. Here is what I do know:

Plate on left seat bracket: 288 59, AA1, 1540
Engine block: 8*12*S (aug 12, 1947) on tag above distributor: FAAM, 2 7710 4, AA1
Hydraulic case: L, 9*4*x (sep 4, 1952), 357657R1
Hydraulic case back plate: 354353 R1, L 2
Transmission casing: 6*2*T (june 2, 1948), 351687-R1
Gearbox casing: 5*25*T (may 25, 1948), L 3, 6882 DA

With all these sn's, I still don't have a sure date of manufacture. I have read on these invaluable postings that the Super A-1 had "1540" on the plate, but it also had foot pedal for accelerator. Mine doesn't, but there is a hole on the linkage for an extra bar, so I could see where it easily could have had one at some point.

From my view, everything was cast in 1947, 1948, and 1952. All the components look like they belong. I.E. the rust color of it all looks uniform, nothing stands out. They hydraulics were cased in 1952, which makes me think this is a 1952 model. Yet, the sn on the seat bracket looks like it's a 1950 model. Confusing!@!!@!@!@

If anyone has anyyyyy information at all that they could try and shed some light on this for me, I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Also, if you have recently rebuilt one of these, I would love to get in touch with you for lessons learned, etc.

Thanks again,
Doug

My SA serial # plate was worn to the point it was hard to make out as well. I covered it with a piece of paper and briskly rubbed it with a pencil and was able to easly see the #. The # you posted would be for a 1950 SA.
