Surely a mag can be bench tested by a person of limited ability such as myself. Any simple test procedures out there ???

THANKS !

This is "quick 'n dirty" test that works for me:

1 - Pull the center wire out of the mag distributor cap. Plug it onto a good spark plug.

2 - Lay the mag on it's side on a bench. Then lay the plug top of the mag so the plug shell is touching the metal mag housing.

3 - With your fingers quickly spin the mag drive coupling clockwise 1/2 turn at a time (you gotta spin it fast so the impulse doesn't catch).

If the mag is good you will get a blue spark with every half turn of the coupling. (You will feel a "bump" in turning resistance at the point where the mag "fires".)

This will verify the high voltage section of the mag. To test the distributor part:

4 - Put the center wire back into the distributor cap.

5 - Take a second plug wire and stick into any of the remaining cap towers, then place the other end on the spark plug like before.

6 - Repeat the spin test above. You should get a spark once every TWO revolutions of the drive coupling.

A word of warning: Do this only with dry hands! If you are at all sweaty, the mag is good and finger is in the wrong spot you run a good chance of being knocked on your a$$ when the mag fires...trust me!

I dont like to give away the trade secretes but.
Alls you have to do is if its removed lay it on the RH side looking at the trip take the wire out of the distributor cap and hold it about 1/4 " away from the screw on the side that the switch wire would hook up to and give it a trip or spin the opisite way also and if its good you should see a spark at the wire end. Color depends on coil, points cleanlyness and so on. HOPE THIS HELPS JON

I am gonna chime in now. If you do all this, points are doing their thing, good across the point surface. New condenser, it will fire the first time after it sits a while, then nothing. Jon, is this a a good time for an investment of a coil? I really want to get my B running and lack of ignition is stopping me. I see from above, your are saying I can turn this thing backwards to check fire. Is this right or am I reading it backwards??
thanks Jim

Yes they will fire either way you will have to give it a good turn backwards to get a spark but you can do it by hand I do all the time I had one that did that a few weeks ago what color spark are you getting when you get your first spark? I would try cleaning all connections first the little knob on the coil clean all wire ends with something that will clean and scratch them up a little. Double check the points 13 thousands open dont sand them file or grind. Let me know JON PS a new coil through me will cost you $37.50 plus shipping and tax if you are in NY

JON,
The first fire is good blue fire. I do not sand any points, I have point files for that. Points are .013. I filed them, clean with lint free paper. I have done everything that I normally do when working on lawn mowers. On your coils, have you had good luck with them??? How often do you ship them? Usually at this point on a lawn mower, I replace the coil, but I have 3 mags doing the same thing. So I guess it is time to take all apart, clean again, then if still nothing have you send me a coil. do you take any credit cards or anything like that??

JON,
if you want to email me an invoice on the coil and your M head, I will pay it via paypal.
Should equate to 87.50 plus shipping. I appreciate all you help you have given me on this. That is the main reason I getting this coil from you in New York instead of getting it local. You have answered a lot of questions and I appreciate it.
