Had a 686 with the 312 diesel. Not a bad machine. Now I have a 756 with a turbo on the 310. It puts out some pretty decent power, but it has a much heavier rear end. Another thing, the turbo has been on the tractor since it was new, and it seams that tractors can handle that much better than putting one on it when the tractor is 25 years old.

BR,

I agree. I think IH knew what they were doing when they crossed over to that bigger system in the higher horsepower tractors.

Just makes sense to split that load out over more area.

Allen I not saying put a turbo on your 686 put that rear end will handel a 234 corn picker better than a 560 your 6 row planter may be to much. I know of a 656 gas that had no troble staying wit a 4020 wit 4-16 plow and the 656 with 4-14 plow it had no troble wit the 4-16 plow in 6000 hrs one TA job and new bolts in the differencial case.

Thanks Aces,

Not to worry 'bout a blower on this one. I'm not puttin' another nickel in this old tractor..... Well, unless of course, she should happen break down.

There's a limit to everything.....and this old gal has already reached her “nickel & dime me to death” threshold long ago. :>)

Hi Cmore!

Heck, I dunno.....

I'm wondering if the rear end could even handle it; they are pretty scrawny the way it is.

I plan on just using the 686 for a cultivator tractor and maybe making a little hay; it really isn't big enough for field work to any extent; doubt if it will even pull a packer.

Also, I don't think it is big enough to even handle a 6 row mounted planter, is it? Never tried this sized tractor on a heavy planter, so don't know.

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan

Allan;

A book I have rates a 686 diesel at 8000lbs and +60hp. Seems hp should be more then that. Should handle a 6 row pull type planter. Dont know about mounted. And depending on size of packer(not sure what that consists of)it should handle that ok. Now about the plow, You should atleast be able to pull it down the road. My 706 german would pull a 4-16 semimount fast hitch IH plow in 4 and low. Same with a 15'MF tandem disk with bar harrow. 4 and low for the most part. That would usually give me an easy 4.5mph.

Hope all works out for you and you can get back on the farm.

Mornin' Steve,

Yes, I think you hit it right on the head. I think this one is somewhere's about 62 to 64 horse and it tips the scales right at 9100 lbs. 'Course when I get down outta these hills, I've got to get that fluid out of those rear tires and buy a set of clamp ons.

I'm pretty sure it will handle this 14.5' disc to knock down stalks and I will also be able to use it to pull a 15' 3-point rotary hoe.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, we are darned sure gonna get out there again, or by golly, take our very last breath a tryin'. :>)
