my parts book doesn't show it and my other books haven't got here yet. where does the temp guage sending unit fasten. i figured it would go in the engine block some place, but all i can see where it might go is into the touch control resevour. I don't overheat as i can tell, but i don't want to take a chance either, thanks for any help. ugly

The Engine Temp Gauge with Radiator Shutters was also sold as an OPTION on the gas only models. I have one, a 1950, it set up exactly like the parts books shows, with the shutter control lever on the left outside of the Control box (Where the ameter is), Push the lever forward and it pulls a rod rearward thus opening the shutter. The rod run from the lever behind the carb and generator, where it makes a zig zag to get up under the grill housing. The heat temp gauge mount on a bracket in front of the coil and has a lead over to the Z pipe (collant entry point, where the radiator connects through a hose to the engine), OEM does have the whole set up to make yours have the gauge, but don't think they have the shutters, which are a fairly rare deal...

The temperature gauge was part of the distillate package that also contained the radiator shutters. On my 46 A the temp gauge sensing bulb screws into the top part of the lower water inlet. The gauge itself is held in place on top of the governor housing by a bracket. You can get a reproduction gauge bracket from OEM and Pilot Knob Restorations.

The '48 Super did not have the water temp gauge. It is shown in the IH parts book on the page titled "Radiator Shutter, Controls and Heat Indicator". This is the first page in the "Chassis" section. As others have said, it appears that it was standard with distillate and kerosene versions.

To my knowledge, the only A"s to be equipped with a water temp gauge were distilate and kerosene models. The reason was that those ran hotter to allow better combustion of the low grade fuel. They had shutters to allow the operator to manually control the heat, so were equipped with a temp gauge. This gauge was mounted on the governor housing, and the sensor was mounted into a threaded port on the return water "Z" tube. The gasolene models didnt have the tube threaded, only the flat on the casting. Hugh MacKay answered the hydraulic gauge question.

The temp sending unit for the engine temperature screws into the lower Z-shaped cast piece that bolts to the engine block and through which the cooling water flows from the radiator to the block. My Super A has this since it is a dual fuel tractor. From previous posts on this subject I recall that standard tractors did not have this threaded hole but that it can be drilled and tapped to accept the sending unit.
Wait/hope for a reply from Gene B, he is very knowledgable on these tractors.

Are you refering to the hydraulic temp gauge or a water temp gauge. The hydraulic temp gauge sending unit screws into a hole in base of hydraulic screen or filter. I suspect you have to buy the filter as well. I have never really looked into this, but one of my tractors has the gauge, and other two don't and don't even have the hole in filter base.

If you are refering to water temp gauge, I have never had one on any of my off set tractors. I do know some tractors have them. I'm really not much help on this.

Ah so, I see the error of my ways. Further study of the parts book tells me it is indeed the heat guage for the hyd. Now it all makes sense. Thanks fellas
