Hi All,

I finally found the plow I want except the dealer wants $700 more for it than I gave for a brand new one 30 years ago.

What gives with that deal? :>(

OK Allan, Im not afraid to ask how that thing works? Not a farmer, just guessing that that trail wheel is hydraulically operated to raise and lower the main beam and some how at the end of the field the whole thing rotates at the pull or pivot point for the opposite hand plow? Is that anywhere close to being right?
Thanks.

Mornin" Scotty,

The whole she-bang is 3-point mounted, of course and is built in two pieces: The hitch has a large diameter barrel that the main plow backbone rides on.

If you will notice in the picture, there is a hydraulic cylinder laying crosswise on top of the hitch frame right behind and above the lower hitch points. This cylinder is tied to both the hitch and the main plow frame.

When the cylinder is actuated, the whole mess rotates laterally 180 degrees on this large barrel and it always rotates in a direction whereby that gauge wheel will swing down underneath the plow as it rotates.

This swinging motion of the spin allows gravity to unlock a somewhat large "rocking" lock at the gauge wheel and will then let the gauge wheel drop down onto it"s opposite catch as the plow is coming up into the opposite pull direction.

The sequence is: lift the 3-point at the end of the field, do a tight braking figure-8 turn out onto the unplowed ground while at the same time spinning the plow over for the next run. The whole complete spin of the plow probably doesn"t take 3 to 5 seconds.

Hope this makes sense, I"m only on my first cup. :>)

Scotty,

I've got a 60 horse outfit that "might" lift it & move it across the yard, hence the overwhelming need for that 966 I'm so desperately searching for. :>)

Isn't this old iron fun? But hey! Why doesn't my banker wanna talk to me anymore? Geeze! I just don't get it! He's got no sense of humor at all.... :>)

Around here plows go pretty cheap (central michigan)
I saw a JD 6 bottom spring reset go for $440.00 at
auction last winter,it was real nice. They could hardly get anyone to bid on it.We got a 5 bottom
international semi-mount for $50.00 a couple years ago,all it needs is two new moldboards to be field
ready. There are very few plows in the field anymore
in our area, mostly all disc-chisels.Dad still likes
to plow down june clover & corn stubble.

Allen, how do I put this? I can see that the plow is red and all that, but, well, you see, oh well, I'll go ahead and say it, it is not an IH. There, I said it, and I feel a lot better.

Actually, I've never had any experience with any of the spinner type plows. They just weren't used around here.

Rusty,

When the wife and I get this hobby venture of ours all put together, I want ya to swing by out this way if it is at all possible (don't know where ya live) and give this type plow a try.

You'll just eat it up!

NC,

Yep, it's hard for me to even think about that day so many years ago, but that is exactly how I lost the first one.

I think mine brought a screamin' $500 if I remember right.

This thread is going in the wrong direction..... .. :>(

Hi Farmallman,

It takes about a 100 horse tractor to pull one of these things nicely; they are one heck of a plow and the thing I like about the Masseys is that they do pull so easy as compared to some of the other brands.

I haven't got a darned thing that will pull it..... ....(yet). :>)

Got lots of hurdles to jump before I can even start to think about buying the plow (the wife and I are still workin' on the darned dirt deal).

"""honey, it"s a great deal and that way i"ll have it when i get more land. if i let it go then i"ll get more land and i won"t have the equipment to work it!""" who am i kidding, it only works sometimes.

Casey,

There are days when I think I am totally crazy; but I guess you gotta jump when the jumpin' is good.

10 days ago, I bought this darned IH disc and haven't even got the farm bought yet.

How dumb is that? :>)

Oh well, it's gonna happen all in good time.
