'48 Super A fuel and water

I just inhereted my popaws' Super A, and realized that I had never spent enough time with him learning about the tractor. Don't feel bad lots of time was spent fishing!

The owners manual says that the tractor will run on gas but is designed for distillate. What is distillate, and if I continue to use gas as popaw did for 50 years do I need to use a lead additive

My second question is why does my radiator make bubbling noises if I run it for over 10 minutes. I plan on adding antifreze to the straight water in the radiator, but do I need to check out the water pump and thermostat.

I know nothing about cars or engines. I am an industrial mechanic so I am confedent about working on the tractor, but I NEED a service manual like the ones the repair shop would have.

If the tractor has been running on gas well then you should be able to continue to do so. The lead served as a lubricant for the valves etc, I would assume that if there was any damage done by using straight gas it"s been done already. When I had my head re-done a year ago, the machine shop put in new valve seats which made it compatible with the lead free gas, not exactly sure what the difference is, but they were basically metal "disk" like seats that were pressed into a bore that they made in the head.

Second thing, do not add straight antifreeze to the rad, you must mix it first. The bubbling you are hearing is the natual sounds from the thermal siphon system these tractors used (there is no water pump). Draining is really easy since there is a plug on the bottom of the rad on the bottom. There is a hole in the front end of the casting to reach it easily.

YOu are going to have a lot of pleasure with your tractor, I think.

For a Service Manual, go to Binder Books on the internet. You may also want to get a Parts Manual, because that has a lot of good illustrations about how things go together.
Some time back on the forum, a knowledgeable person gave a good comment on distillate. I do not believe you need to use a lead additive. With thanks to them, I pass the article along to you. I have an "H" made for distillate, and I just recently traded the dist. carb and small gas tank to a discussion board member who wanted those items, and I received a gasoline carb in return. Check below (and I am sorry that I don't know the person to give credit to):

What exactly is distillate?

: Distillate is simply the left over parts of crude oil after the more popular fractions have been distilled out! Hence the name.....
: : Basically, you'd take the crude oil and heat it in a still. The different hyrdocarbons in the crude mix will distill out in order of their complexity.
: : Methane (one), Butane (two), Propane (three), etc. All come out in order as gas and are sent to storage facilities at the well sites (usually). The crude oil is a mix of all of the liquid (at normal temperatures) HC chains. If you heat it up, the liquids turn into gas, with the lighter ones boiling off first, followed in succession by the heavier ones. The crude oil in the still will settle out at temperature points, which tells you what fraction is boiling off currently.
: : Now, since you want reasonably pure Gasolene, Kerosene, diesel, etc. you have a point where the liquid in the still is ramping to the next temperature point; you need to dump the output during the ramping into a different container. Once the temp. stabilizes at the next point, you switch the output to the pipes leading to the specific storage tanks (gas, kero, etc.)
: : So, when you're done with this process you have a number of tanks containing specific grades of fuels, and an extra tank containing a mixture of all of the fuels. This extra mixed fuel was referred to as distillate!
: : Now, you wonder where you can get it today? You can't! It hasn't existed since 1943! you see, the oil refining process was forever changed as a result of the Second World War!
: : A process for making a barrel of crude oil into a barrel of gasolene was needed to fuel the war effort. The distillation process was replaced by the cracking process.
: : Cracking involves a catalytic process whereby all of the HC chains in the crude are split in to single HC molecules. Then, these molecules are recombined into the required HC chains necessary to produce a specific fuel (Gasolene, Kerosene, Diesel, etc).
