My H is overheating and I can't figure it out.
Water is coming out of the top of the radiator and it is really flowing. The radiator does not have a pressure cap on it, just a regular gas cap style. Could that be the problem?

The rad, water pump, are not leaking. Does this tractor have a thermostat?

The funny thing is..it is an intermittant problem. I had it at the local dealer, they put it on the dyno and it didn't spew any fluid at all. No water in the oil, etc.

What would you guys look at?

No the tractor is not actually overheating, not even really running hot (I can put my hand on the engine block and it is warm but that is about it.

Should I pull the coolant plug on the block to see if it is circulating?

How would I tell if the water is circulating through the rad? Thanks again

If it is a 1951 model then it would have the later pressurized radiator, It should have a regular pressure cap on the radiator. It sounds like maybe yours has a cap from an older non-pressurized type radiator. Get a new cap, and see if it makes any difference.

Make sure the front of the radiator is not blocked by trash. Take the cap off and look in the rad when it is running to determine if the water is circulating. Some guys run them without thermostats, but it is best to put one in it. The thermostat will allow it to run at the correct temp.

The H had 2 radiator systems. The very early ones were a thermo syphon system and the later ones were a pressure pumped system. The change occured around 43. It sound like you have a clogged radiator though. It throughs out water until the level is low enough for expansion to occur without spilling water and tehn simply operates at that lower level. It is actually running hot?

The H did have 2 radiator systems, the early ones were a non-pressurized radiator, and the later ones were pressurized. All Hs used a water pump, irregardless of what radiator was used.

Yes they do have a thermastat in that round oblong housing above the water pump. I would say if it was on the dyno it was super tuned so I would not think it was the timing. Is the radiator pluged yuckylooking in side? How about the fins alot of dirt and grease in them, How aboutthe fan belt good and tight. Then there is build up in the motor not alowing for good coolant flow. Check some of these things out. PS I have never run a thermastat in my H. Took it out a long time ago. JON
