Rebuild on DT361

Probably stupid question but my 1206 with the DT361 needs a rebuilt. I can get a crank out of a DT 407 really easy and fairly reasonably cheap. My question is will that crankshaft work with my 361 block and will it give the tractor any more power? Someone told me that the crankshaft out of the 407 has a longer stroke so you increase the power a little. I don't know. I use my 1206 for a little spring field work and a little pulling in the summer.

Thank you for any help.

Chad

The crank out of a 407 will not fit the 361. If you install it the pistions will stick up about a 1/8 out of the top of the block.

Thanks for the info. Hate to poke at ya but you have any suggestions for getting power out of that old 361? Can I increase the bore? Change piston styles?

Thanks

Chad

If the 407 crank will go into the 361, you will need the 407 rods, and pistons so the compression height of the pistons match the crank stroke. ChadS

Thanks Chad for the response. I am back to drawing board again. This tractor is not easy to get power from.

Thanks again.

Not easy to get power from? How much are you after? 300? You should be able to get 150 easy, just by turning up the pump.

Well not quite 300 but would like around the 200 mark with the pump turned all the way up. Just wondering since the motor is coming apart if I could bore/stroke it for a little more. I am one of those guys who is never satisfied....

You should be able to get 200 easy enough, I would think. A neighbors 1206 was dynoed at the local dealer and they quit at 190, and they think it still had a long way to go. Turn the pump all the way. If it is power you are after, a lot easier than trying to change stroke or boring. I mean if you want a puller, but for farm, I have never heard of anyone not getting all the power they want out of one. There were a whole bunch of guys that wanted to see if they could get more when those tractors came out, I have never heard of any being disappointed.

Post again if you want, but the pump is probably the same off the 14 as is on the 1206, not sure. The injectors could be a little different. I don't know where you are at Chad. In Des Moines, there is George's Diesel. Top notch shop. Find the pump shop where you are at, take your pump to them, and tell them what you want out of it. They will take care of the rest. Good luck.

Hey Dan,

I am from Wisconsin if that matters but anyway the 1456 pump was a 4 roller pump vs the 1206 2 roller pump...From what I understand the two more rollers increase the fuel flow considerably and should get my 1206 up and going...Ever heard of Inject Tech in Iowa??? Supposed to be a good diesel pump shop, considering talking to them.. Do you know of any good suppilers to get motor parts for my 361? Performance parts? Larger pistons, roller rockers, larger valves...I decided to go all out on this tractor...give the 1066's a little run if I can..

Thanks for the replies Dan nice of ya.

Chad

The investment you will make in a 4 roller will make awfully disapointed with what little gain you will get. Your pump is a .370 plunger the same as a 4 roller. I have a DT361 in my 1967 IH pickup stock fuel system but with an HX35W turbo off a 24 valve Dodge cummins and it is pushing at least 210HP at the flywheel. That can get what you want.
If want more power yet go with a .390 or .450 injection pump, bigger lines and bigger turbo. Do some port work on the head install orings then your talking 400HP. Thats what my 1206 has. By the way the rods on a 407 and 361 are the same except for the late 407's ie 1456 which have a bigger wrist pin.

Is your 1206 a stock 361? Would it be my best option to rebuilt the motor back to stock and just go with a .390 roosamaster with bigger lines and injectors? I have a 3lm schwitzer for the tractor with a large exhaust housing-came off 1206 with about 600 to 700 horse, he went to s4...
Just looking for the most hp for my buck. I would like to pull 2nd high with the tractor in the farm stock class.

Thanks for the info Brad

Chad
