I have a IH 354 gas motor. After about 3 hours of run time it likes to just quit and now wont start at all. I changed plugs cap and rotor. I have a set of points but dont know what to set the gap at. I have no tune up info. If you have any info or insite on prob please let me know.

Thanks much, Mr. Greenjeans

I have one too and the problem with mine turned out to be the POS Zenith carb. Has so many little passages and the float is a cylinder that gets cought up on the side of the chamber, do you have a fuel filter on it? Check your carb out

Plug gap: .024"
Point gap: .014"
Timing: 5 degrees btc (timing mark on pulley)

Mowr,

I've been pondering over the best timing for the 354 gas...The manual says to set the points to .003 past opening with the pointer at the "notch" on the pulley. Then it says to advance or retard as needed and judge by the smoothness of the engine. It doesn't say if the notch is TDC or some degree of advance. It seems to me that with today's advanced timing tools there is a better method for optimal timing. Maximum fuel efficiency is largly dependent on correct timing and the 354 gas engine uses too much fuel not to have it at it's peak. I'd appreciate any tips on optimizing the timing. Thanks,
Gene

On page 69 of the operators manual the illustration 84 says the timing mark on the crank pulley is for TDC. Hook up a timing light and set the timing to TDC using that mark. Advance or
retard as required for best running but you can use your light as a guide. I would look for some advance as long as it starts OK and assuming there is no advance mechanism in the distributor. I cannot see anthing in the manual that tells me there is an advance mechanism in the distributor (under the points mounting plate) It is likely a fixed distributor (no advance). If it does have an advance mechanism, just set timing to TDC. If you don't have a timing light do a static timing with a test light across the points. Light should light just as the points break, as timing mark on crank pulley meets pointer. The timing, after all is said and done, is not extremely critical. A few degrees this way or that will not likely be noticeable.
