I ajusted the third brush until it was one and one half bar away from the brush in front of it. Now it charges fine. I know the book sais it should be no closer than 3.2 bars away? Is it ok to run it this way?

Bob – So long as the ammeter shows a charge 15 of amps or less (with the lights off), the generator should be OK with that 3rd brush setting. However if the exterior of the generator gets too hot to touch after running at full speed for 15 minutes or so, you should back off the 3rd brush – otherwise you risk burning out the generator windings.

I played with that third brush quite a bit on my 1940 H, finally got it to charge the way I wanted it to. Mine is like yours, about 1 1/2 bars away. This H has been running a woods belly mower every summer for about 5 years now. Everything is just fine.

I have had no experience with this, but I would guess you will overcharge the battery, or burn the armature, perhaps both--someone will correct me.
