I have an H that has a different number on the block then is on the tractor. What is the difference? Does the number on the engine have anything to do with when it was made or what parts fit?

Thank you, Bill

Your tractor has had the engine replaced. On ALL Farmall H's, the serial numbers on the chassis match the engine serial numbers. On Farmall M's, they do not match.

Checked my parts books -- you are correct.

IH did not attempt to match serials on the chassis and block on either H's or M's. But, on early models they were usually identical. The numbers do indicate how old the engine is, the higher the number, the newer. If you have a chassis serial with a 5 digit number, and an engine serial with a 6 digit number, the engine has been changed. A parts book is quite helpful in determining which parts fit -- if there is a difference the book will list the serial number breaks. In any case, when determining engine parts such as pistons, sleeves, etc, it is always better to measure.
