I have a 45 M and the engine number is BKM95892. I think its cracked internally and recently acquired a another block, a 50 model. It's number 228008 X1. What does the BKM mean on the first one and what does the X1 mean on the other?

The BKM is intersting- IH might have put this on replacement blocks for awhile but I thought they were usually blank- a W-6 would have WBKM, a U-6 UBKM, etc. Sometimes the stamp didn't hit square and one letter might not have struck. Sometimes something may have rubbed a letter out. Of course, maybe there was another letter on the tractor that you didn't see. Anyway, the BKM is essentially the type and size of the engine. No signifigance, other than IH was getting a combination of letters they hadn't used before! All of the single and double letter combinations were taken by then. X1 means a gas engine.

I have never heard of an engine code starting with BKM. I do know however, that engine codes for Farmall M's do start with FBKM. Like Johm M said, I think maybe the "F" wasn't stamped in well, got scratched off somehow, or is covered with oil or paint.

It should read FBKM,WBKM or IBKM.F being the m,W being the W-6 and I being the I-6.All of these engines would fit an M.Ill bet the first letter is there, you just cant make it out good or it may have not been stamped good at the factory.Regardless, itll fit youre M.As Robert said,X1 is a gas engine.

Not sure about BKM. All the M's I know of mostly have FBK M XXXXX which was the factory code for Model M. X1 means that it is a gas powered tractor. I know that there are some other engine block codes out there but I don't have my tractor books here with me.

I found my Farmall book on letter series tractors and it doesn't have a listing for a BKM. Like I said, most Farmall M, have a FBK M code. Could be an industrial Model M block but I still don't think it would have started with a "B" rather than an "F". The guy to ask on here is Guy Fay. He wrote the book I was talking about and many more books about Farmall's and their history. He would be the man to solve this. Personally, I think that it could be a misprint but I could be wrong.
