Here"s a really strange one.... the serial number plate says our 450 is a "58 (20269), but every casting I can find says it is a "57 (letter C), even the engine block with the serial number plate.

Guy, now I remember reading somewhere the inconsisticies of serial numbers in the fiscal/calendar year lists. Thank you all for responding.

450 prior to hood and grille assembly after minor overhaul.

IH's own "yearly" serial numbers lists disagree. Your tractor was for sure built in December, 1957. One IH serial number list uses fiscal year, which uses tractors built November 1st 1957 and after as 1958s. The other list is close to a calender year list, but not quite the same. I've got the monthly serial list in the new Hundred Series Originality Guide. The IH Archives got the original monthly lists from Navistar in 2001, after many of the other books (including my serial number book) were written.

Red: Nothing unusual about that, castings were cast as much as 2 years ahead for the assembly line. Not unuaual to find tractors with some castings one year and some the next. Most of those castings would have been done in groups. When they for example set up to do axle carriers, they would do a large number then switch to another.

Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was your tractor.

Tractor was assembled near end of 57 or begining
of 58.Castings were made ahead of time.

Two of my books show your serial number to be a 1957 model.

If 1958 is stamped on plate, could be that was when dealer sold it.
