Long head stud on Super H

I have seen discussions on the 3 longer head studs on the H. My Super H has only 1 longer stud and 1 thick washer. The parts book confirms the long stud count but does not show the washer anywhere that I can find. Shame on me that I didn't make note at disassembly of where this long one goes. Does anyone know? No guesses please. The only thing that I can think of that would require a longer stud is the bracket for the speed change lever but that would invlove two studs and where would the thick washer come in?

The three longer studs with washers go in the center of the head roughly along the long centerline under the rocker assembly. If you have cleaned up the top surface of the head really well, you can see 3 sleeves that are pressed into the head casting. They go through the water jacket so the bolt stresses don't collapse it. IHC designers in the late 1930's felt it was much easier to bore the head and press in sleeves than to have core problems at the foundry.

That said, I also recomment that the 4th and 5th longest bolts be used at the throttle lever bellcrank support. I stripped a nut here on my H because I didn't pay attention to that little detail.

Thank You!! I assume that there was a casting change from H to Super H that reduced the need from 3 sleeves to 1, I can clearly see what you mean, it is the one right in the center.

I pulled the head off my cousin's 300 (same engine as the SH) several weeks ago. I seem to recall the lone longer stud being on the left side, 2nd from the rear of the engine but I'm not certain. However I can take a look at it this weekend and get back to you if no one else responds.

I don't recall a thicker washer anywhere...
