I was driving down the driveway tonight with two kids on my lap and one standing on a platform mounted on my Drawbar. All of a sudden I had an anxeity attack---"WHAT if this seat broke off!". I mean, hanging way out behind the tractor, high up off the ground, what if the seat broke and we all fell? By the time I came to the tractor would be in the next county. So, has anyone ever had the seat break?

Thank you for your response--I enjoyed it. Safety is a concern. I make it a point that no kids or passengers ride when equipment is running, pulled or powered off the tractor---that is a good habit to teach your kids. Only time they are allowed to ride on the tractor is when we are taking a "sunday Drive". I stooped by the junk yard yesturday and bought a old van seat that I plan to moung on a trailer and pulll behind the tracotr. I am going to go out and check all my tractors for thinned bolts, rusted through springs, etc. Thanks again!!!!! !!!!! Ron

It wasn't IH, I think and old AC, but a couple years ago seat broke, fella fell off back of tractor and was run over by disk. He survived and completely recovered, but only because he was not alone and someone was there to get help. Don't know details of what happened with the seat.

When I bought my 1936 F-20, the original angle-iron seat support bar had been replaced with a section of leaf spring. It was nicely done, and the leaf was tightly bolted to the seat support mount. It had a nice bounce to it. Then some YT folks advised me to remove the leaf spring immediately and find and install a correct seat support with the coil spring and the long bolt, which I did. The reason is that other Farmalls have had similar modifications done in the past, with a leaf spring used to hold the seat. For whatever reason, leaf springs WILL break, giving the operator a quick ride straight down to the ground, and possibly into an implement, if not saved by the drawbar. I advise you to inspect all of your seat parts to make sure that the bolts are not worn. If they are, replace them. Also, make sure your coil spring is good. I've heard that these can get rusty and weak, and if one breaks and the seat suddenly drops a few inches, it could be enough to knock the operator off the seat.

Anything can happen. I would make sure the pivot bolt is not nearly worn in two.
I have thought about this same thing when I see 3 or 4 men sitting on a pickup tailgate. Tailgates are NOT designed to support that much weight!

You have more to worry about than the seat. Kids and tractors don't mix. About 3 months ago, in Wichita, KS, a city transplant (ie, knows nothing about tractors), was bushhogging with a Ford tractor (I think 8N or later). Hit a bump, kid fell off and got shredded by the mower. Forgive the gruesomeness, I'm trying to make a point. The guy has to live with that the rest of his life.
