I have been looking at an 806. looks to be in good condition - clean, straight metal, new front tires, new batteries, new torque and clutch. I am wondering what horsepower these tractors are rated at. And what things to look for that could be wrong/broke or what is bad points and good points of tractor. Also, what kind of price range do these typically sell for, I know condition of tractor has alot to do with the price. thanks in advance for info.

I came close to buying a sweet looking 806 a year ago. The only reason i don't own it today is because it had the fast hitch. some people love them and they work well for them but i'm on the other side of the fence. their are adapters available to use it as a 3 pt hitch and i believe they work quite well but the ground clearance is reduced quite a bit with the fast hitch and that just won't work for me. otherwise i hated to pass on buying it. the 806 is one of the best tractors ih built.

Horsepower is 94. Price, anywhere from $4000-$6500 for a good runner. Weak point- shifting.

I would have to agree. The 06 series had a stupid shifting pattern. Be prepared to grind some gears. Otherwise, the D-361 was a hell of an engine. With tractors this age, condition is everything. A well maintained, cared for tractor is worth so much more than one a guy just beat the living hell out of. Good luck.

this tractor looks like it was well taken care of. is there any way to adjust the gears so it doesn"t grind, or is that the way it always will be?

One problem is the shift pattern itself. You have to shift through low every time you want to go from high to reverse. The fix there is to install a 56, 26, or 66 series shift kit. Costs about $500 and takes a little work, but is so much nicer. The 56, 26, and 66 sereis tractors had high, low, and reverse laid out in an h-pattern. Now, on the grinding. They will all grind if you don't take the time to shift them. The proper way to do it is to start out with a properly ajusted clutch, TA, and transmission brake linkage. When shifting the Range Transmission (high, low, reverse), you must come to a complete stop. Push in the clutch pedal about 3/4 of the way and apply the brakes. Then, push the clutch pedal all the way down to engage the transmission brake. Now shift. You don't need to worry about all of this when shifting the Speed Transmisson (1-2-3-4), with a little practice, you'll be able to shift those gears on the move without grinding.
