Farmall 656 gear box newbie?

I'm the new owner of a Farmall 656 and realy have no idea what I'm doing. I got it hitched for some brush hogging and set out to the field. I wanted to change gears so I pushed and pulled on levers and pedals until off I went in what feels like 3'rd or 4'th gear. But now I can't down shift... in fact I have no neutral or reverse. I have no idea how this thing is geared out. Is there a Hi-Lo lever some where?

Help!

Thanks-

Sounds like you just got it stuck in gear. I don't know how a 656 works, but on a 666/686 just take the battery out, and with the gearshift in neutral, find the linkage that looks to be out of place and line it back up with the rest of them. THis will probably require someone to push on the clutch. THe lever on your left is the ta, and the one one the right side of the dash is the gearshift. For the TA, forward is Direct Drive, and back engages the TA. The gear shift pattern is as follows:

R 2 4
--N--
1 3 5

Thanks everyone for all the great advice. I did go ahead and remove the battery and cover and exposed the shift rail linkages. It is clear that the rail for 4'th/5'th gear is not movable and sitting slightly higher then the other rails. However, now that I have it exposed how can I fix this? It still seems like a problem in the gear-case not with the rail itself.. although I suppose that's possible. I can pry it a little with a wedge but I don't want to force it and it doesn't seem to do much good. Perhaps someone who has dealt with this before can tell me the trick to get this gear free again.

Thanks-

Thanks for the help... I'll try looking under the batter tomorrow!

At risk of soundling like a complete dope... what is a TA?

I guess I should have said this before, but along the same lines as everyone else do some more research before you hop back on that tractor. Not only could you damage that wonderful piece of machinery, but you could seriously injure yourself as well. Perhaps the best reference would be someone who has already driven this tractor. Then he or she could show you first hand all the ins and outs of a 656.

The TA is the Torque Amplifier. Basiaclly a two-speed powershift. Your 656 has the Mechanical TA, which will not allow engine braking with the lever back.

With the lever ahead, the planetary is "locked up" by the TA clutch and you get direct drive.

With the lever back, power enters though the primary sun gear, travels through the planet gears, and leaves through the secondary sun gear, giving you a 33% gear reduction. While that is happening, the ring gear (around the outside of the planet gears) needs to be held still. A one-way clutch, commonly called the ramp and rollers, is used for this. This fine while the tractor is traveling on level ground or uphill, but when you go downhill, the ramp and rollers will overrun, and the tractor will freewheel. You must never travel downhill with the lever back, or you will damage the TA, or much worse, lose control and get yourself hurt.

Get yourself a manual, learn how to keep the linkage ajusted, don't be afraid of wearing it out (use it!), and it will last.

Jared the 656 is the same as the ones described above. Most 656's after several thousands of hours of operation. the linkage wears so sometimes it doesn't shift out of the gear you are in even though the lever is in neutral.Make sure when you shift you follow the shift pattern closely, I mean pull straight back from fourth to nuetral them move to your next gear then straight in. If it is stuck in 4th see if you can get the shifter to go back in 4th, don't force hard. if it goes it will save a battery removal and some skinned knuckles. Mine is the same way for the last 10 years.

Hmmmm,

Don't suppose you just bent a shift rail or pulled a collar pin?

Dunno.

Seems possible... I don"t know if I broke it or just don"t know how to use it. I"m trying to avoid a service call that results in the guy coming out here and flipping a lever and having all work fine... then belly laughing at me while handing me the bill.

You should make a concerted effort to educate yourself on the operation of the tractor before you jump in the seat and go rumbling off to "bush hog," and end up wrecking something because you didn't know what you were doing. It's expensive, and potentially dangerous. If you don't know what the levers do, you have no business being in the seat. Find an owner's manual, or someone who can teach you.

Sorry to be harsh, but yet another person got killed on a tractor out where I grew up last week because he didn't know what he was doing...
