I am looking at purchasing a IH 70 Hydro and need some advice. The tractor has been sitting for several years but started and run occasionally. The owner says it has developed a miss on one cylinder, (6 cyl. gas). He has replaced the spark plugs and wires with no success. It shows 2500 hrs on the tach. It has not been running this year and I won't be able to get it started prior to purchasing it if I am interested. The tractor is complete and the visual condition is fair considering is sits outdoors. I am not familiar with the hydro series tractors and need to know what one might need to be aware of when attempting to revive one. If the hydro needs work, can one who is mechanically able, work his way through the system or is this an area where a professional should be involved? I am not too concerned about the miss as I think it could be a stuck valve from sitting. What is a fair price range for a tractor of this era? If anyone has any advice, I would certainly appreciate it.

Leon, I also have a hydro 70 gas. It is a very handy machine for PTO work. Not to good for just pulling. Pretty inefficient and will really suck down the fuel. The hydros are pretty expensive to fix if they are bad. I've heard 5000 bucks. At 2500 hrs. it should still be good. You should get the engine running and test the hydro by puting the tractor in high range and with the brakes on, move the lever forward. It should kill the engine running at half throttle. Without running it I wouldn't give over 1500. Should part for that.

Bruce,

Thanks for the advice! I have been reading through the archives and picked up some good tips. The owner wants $2,000.00 for the tractor which I thought was reasonable, but I think I will go the extra mile and get her running before I layout the money. Thanks again!
