Tractor quit running

Anybody got time for a real problem?

Anyway, I was out mowing today, it was hot, about 95, but cutting real fine. The ol' B 414 diesel ticking along, sounding just fine.

All at once, it picks up RPM for a few seconds and then slows back down. A minute later, it does it again only this time when it slows down, it just slowly quits running.

I bled the fuel lines, opened the air filter, still won't start. I'm hoping that this is just a clogged filter or something in the fuel tank blocking the flow of fuel, so I'll start there.

Radiator water is fine, no oil. Oil is fine, no water. Fuel smells like diesel.

Any ideas?

Hi UFO Man, sure sounds like a blocked fuel line. Tractor will run short of fuel the govenor in the injector pump will go full throttle and engine will surge and then die. I assume you opened the bleed screws on the injector pump and pumped the hand pump until there was only fuel coming out the bleed screws?

Did you loosen 2 injector line nuts and crank the engine until fuel shot out around the nut?

Many years ago we had both a B414 and 434 Diesel. The B414 would start by just bleeding the injector pump and the 434, you always had to loosen 2 injector line nuts at the pump.

good luck

UFO,

I agree with Mike.

Your symptoms suggest you "Ran out of fuel" for whatever reason.

Allan

UFO man, are you getting fuel at the sediment bowl? I had a similar problem with a little diesel and there was some crud blocking the flow to the sediment bowl from the tank. I removed the screen ,and took my air gun ,removed the fuel cap and blasted the air up through, blew everything out and its been fine ever since.good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

If he was running out of fuel, why did the RPM rev up and then slow down?

Priming a pump is the process where the pump starts out empty, and liquid is sucked up into it. Losing prime is when the liquid runs out of the pump for some reason, either because the supply has run out, or because there's a leak.

Hi,

The injection pump running out of fuel. The engine will "rev" up somewhat first before it grunts and quits.

It is just like they do when they have air in 'em; except, with the air thing, they will usually 'correct' themselves and stay running.

Again, "Usually", the only time they will just bog and quit is if they have water or gasoline in the system.

In the case of gasoline, they will often "rattle" to beat the band first before they die.

Man, what a response! Thanks for being so quick to reply.

Well, to tell you the truth, all I did yesterday was to tow it out of the field and go cool off for a while. I won't get a chance to get to work on it now until this weekend, maybe. (The money making job demands attention.)

I was thinking along these same lines, but having never run out of fuel on a diesel before, I didn't know about the surge to full throttle.

So when I get to messing with it this weekend, I'll start at the tank end and see if there is any junk in the tank or the sediment bowl. I don't think I'll be surprised to find some. If not, on to the fuel filter, check the pump and see what kind of fuel flow I have at the injectors.

If that doesn't work, I'll be calling for help again, but if it does, I'll let you know.

Thanks again, UFO Man
