I am working on a Super H, or at least so it seems. The tins on the tractor are decaled Super H and have been for years, but when I looked up the serial number it didn't add up. The serial number on this tractoris FBH385877X1. This serial number looks to me like it belongs to an H not a Super H. If anybody can shed some light on this I would appreciate it.

I think the same as you about the serial number. I think this often happened when tractors were painted, or maybe it had an upgrade with some Super H features and they decided to use the new decals.

Ashley: I can see where we have left you a bit in the dark. Starting in 1939 at beginning of production all Hs and Ms had band brakes. At some point and supposedly about the time the tractors came out as Supers all changed to disc brakes. There has always been some confusion as to just when this happened. I have no way of knowing at this date what the serial number of my dad's H. It did have disc brakes and the discs were same as 300.

To throw a bit more confusion into this question, there was also an aftermarket company putting out disc brake conversion kits for Hs and Ms. I have forgotten the name at present.

For these reasons I always recomend going to serial numbers both tractor and engine. The casting codes are also good indicator not only on age of tractor, but will quickly pickup on tractors that have been pieced together from two or more tractors. The Super H I mentioned in earlier post clearly had an H rear end, casting codes revealed that. A super H could also be changed to band brakes. There were and are still people who hate disc brakes enough to do the change. This was understandable as those first disc brakes were not user friendly.

According to parts book all H's after serial number 391358 and all Super H's were equipped with disc brakes. What I meant by that on your tractor is that you could look at side of transmission housing and if it didn't have disc brakes it's probably a regular H. But as Hugh said sometimes things are different from what they are suppose to be.

DWV: I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith on that disc brake item on a 51 or 52 H. That brake item did not change with the model change. My dad bought a new H in 51 and it had IH disc brakes.

Only one positive ID and that is serial number, and make certain your casting codes match up. I've seen a Super H with band brakes but the casting codes didn't match.
